Re-keying door lock cylinders

I bought my 1984 944 as a fixer-upper. You may have seen the thread about interior colors. The one key provided with the vehicle works in the ignition and rear hatch. I'd like to have the cylinders. for the doors and the alarm key redone to match the current key. Has anyone had this done? Is it a local locksmith kind of thing? Thanks.

I took all the locks and a key to a locksmith, it was very easy to do, it was cheap, and it only took them a couple hours.

I didn't do the alarm key, as the 944 alarm is just silly.

I have done it myself several times. Remove the lock cylinders, being careful not to let the pins fall out of the cylinder. Insert the key. You will see that most of the pins will retract into the cylinder. File or grind those still protruding flush with the cylinder. Makes the lock less secure as someone else's key may work. However, my view is that I only want to keep someone from using the handle latch to open the car. If they are more determined, they will get in anyway.

You can also sometimes swap the pins until you find a combination that allows all of them to retract flush when the key is inserted but this takes time, patience and luck.

Thanks, guys. Sounds like I'll pull them out and take them to a local locksmith. I had a good one recommended to me. Need to check the passenger door linkage anyway. Chicks, I don't know anything about the 944 alarm, but your "silly" comment made me smile. Curious what you mean.

Did you get the Porsche gas cap? Or good used gas cap and match to the ignition.

It has the lockable gas cap, but it's unlocked (thank goodness). Don't think I'll worry with it. But thanks for reminding me. I haven't even checked to see if the ignition key fits it. I'll have to do that. I bought the car for a song in December, knowing it would be a while before I could jump into rehabbing it. Now getting started, but planning my attack as funds allow. Thanks!
