Manual Steering Lube - ?
83 944 N/A
When I was last under my car, I noticed that there was a small plastic threaded plug in my manual steering rack. While I was wiping the grease off of it (it was completely covered) it broke off. So, I removed the rest of the plug with a screw driver and I'm planning on replacing it with a metal bolt. My question is... Should some sort of fluid or lube have fallen out of that hole when I removed the plug? Mine was totally dry. I assume that it's there so you can grease the rack or something. What type of lube should I push in there before I replace the plug? Or, should I not add anything? |

No, that plug is only removed when a wheel alignment is carried out. There is a special tool that screws in there and locates the rack in a central position. The plug thread length is very short so make sure the bolt you use does not push against and jam the rack.
As far as grease goes, probably a good multi purpose or moly grease will work fine. Just make sure there isn't any dirt or grit in the rack.
