'83 questions

I'm thinking about buying an '83 944 that had been taken care of to the point of obsessivly anal. I have a couple of questions:

Did th e'83 sunroof not pop up? with a switch, I mean. I couldn't find one for the life of me.
Likewise, no rear hatch release?

And YES!! There is a noticeable difference between the automatic and the 5spd. Wow.

AFJuvat 11-18-2002 02:04 AM

If memory serves (its early and I am still on my first cup of coffee) the 83 was manual only.

Go for it, then let Mrs Todwic drive the auto..

Yup, all manual. We don't need no sissy crap like that...

Oh, the windows are power though.

Buy It! 83's Rule!!!

Buy it just cause its a 5-spd. You need one badly ;) .

Replacing clutches is almost as much fun as rubber disks.

How much for the 83?

CJFusco 11-18-2002 12:25 PM

I love the 83 cars.

Everything is manual: the sunroof, the hatch, no cruise control, no pwer sttering, no power seats, no power locks, no ABS. For this reason, the 1983 cars are considerably lighter than any other 944... but the HP numbers are the same. Ever wonder why the road tests in 1982 and 83 have better numbers than later ones? Lighter=faster. I have driven an 87 944NA... it felt much more sluggish than my 83 (then again, mine has 40K miles and the 87 had 120K). Even the 924S is a little "sportier" than the later 944NA, in many people's opinions (never driven a 924, so I can't judge).

Get the 83.

lambic2000 11-18-2002 05:49 PM

The 88 924S would certainly be considered a 944 "butt kicker".

Price for it:$3500 Goods<ul=square>
New Dunlaps all around
Tranny rebuilt 1000mi ago
Same owner for last 15 yrs. Mobil 1 on his first day
Clutch change @ same time as tranny job (oddly enough)
EVERYTHING he ever did to the car, including adding coolant and how much is documented
timming belt 15000 mi ago, was retensioned at 1800mi
New head gasket, seals, starter, alt., H4 lights, new fogs, someone didn't use the hood as a airbrake...
Could use a paintjob, but the og gaurds red is just oxidized, I think. Nice sound system.

Anywho ....Just for the record (Juvy, you will love this one)
Sunday morning I casually mention to my dearly beloved husband, "You know what I would like for my birthday babes?"
his reply "No telling"
I smile sweetly and continue on, "One of those little Porsches like the one we watched tearin ass at that speedway thingy we went to, remember you rolled your eyes at me for saying it was cute" (apparently "cute" is NOT used to desribe Porsches)
"I want a 914, could you please check recycler online for me? I saw some good deals I think, one was for like 650 bucks even?" Well
Long story short You can see what happened
Oh, he went alrighty he even pretended to look interested in the 914s listed, HA!!!!

Now its my 38th Birthday today mind you
and I am waiting to hear from dealership so we can go close the deal on the 83' 944

*sigh*
well atleast I can say he bought it on my birthday, LOL
( he also bought his 944 on valentines day for HIMSELF!)

CJFusco 11-19-2002 02:38 PM

Sounds like something i would do.

914s are great, but at this stage of my life I would rather have a 944... sure, the 914 is very possibly the best-handling road car that Porsche ever made, but I need a LITTLE bit of accelleration. That being said, my mechanic's brother has a 914 with a 3.6 flat six behind the seats. I hear it crosses real estate with startling rapidity.

And I would also call the 924S a 944 killer... assuming that you're not talking about:
1983 9442.5
1989 9442.7
944S
944S2
944 Turbo

SoCal Driver 11-19-2002 03:22 PM

Why buy a 944 at a dealer?

I really don't like dealers.

You might want to re-think the 914 thing. They rust if you look at 'em funny, they don't weather seal, the heater isn't worth a dime, and they leak oil like a seive. On the other hand, they're a lot of fun on warm clear Summer nights or when tearing up a road that runs along an old creek-bed.

Dollar store. red, white, blue, and green available.

mattdavis11 11-20-2002 09:48 PM

Happy-B Day Ms. Todwic. I hope the purchase came thru. BTW, if the turn sig does'nt cancel, your spring is waiting. Some 83's also came with power mirrors, with the option of the rear wiper, and the roof has no choice but to come off if u want.

AFJuvat 11-21-2002 01:39 AM

Hey, Happy B-day Madam todwic!

97XRAY 11-21-2002 04:23 AM

Maybe the 944 will magically LOOK like a 914 to you and you alone. That would make everyone happy, right? Well, however it goes, happy birthday and good luck. 83s are simply the best.

todwic 11-24-2002 10:36 PM

Not gonna do it, you're right Hugh, dealers suck. Looking at an '84 now.

todwic 11-24-2002 11:25 PM

is that the new "Tripod" edition 944 I've heard about?
