968 engine

I know i have seen pictures of a 968 engine in a 944 so i know it can be put it in. I was curious to know what is all needed to put a 968 block in a 944? Will the clutch, bell housing, tork tube and tranny work from my car with the 968 engine? Or would i need the 968 clutch and bell housing? Would everything else in my car work, would i need the ecu, wiring and everything from the 968?Would my stock radiator and water lines work with the 968? How about the VDO gauges, would they all still work? What about the sensors, wiring, and fuel system, lines, regulators, AC, Power steering? Thanks,

John

Someone on this board just finished dropping a 968 engine into an S2. I recall it was very complicated and took a ton of $$$$.

Last I heard he was stuck trying to get the tach to work.

it was me! It was expensive as well. I do not know all the details, but I used the clutch, flywheel, torque tube, clutch housing and transmission from my 87 944S.

one needs the harnessDME, oil cooler from the 968. I put in a new 944 Turbo radiator. My mechanic had a heck of a problem getting it to fire up. it ended up that my aftermarket alarm was not compatable with the 968's DME. I believe he had to modify a motormount as well. I do not know much more about it other than it was expensive but I really enjoy having power in this car for a change.

Just did one this past weekend.
The 944 S is the best platform for this conversion as it already has some specific parts that will make the coversion cheaper.

Two different routes to go

1) Use the 968 belhousing, torque tube and flywheel/clutch assembley

2) use the 944 S flywheel, torque tube and clutch assembley This allows you to get rid of the heavy dual mass flywheel of the 968.

We chose route 2, wanted to go with option 1 but the torque tube was too expensive to have shipped with the engine from Germany, the 968 bell housing is really trick allowing to change the clutch with out removing the trans and pulling the torque tube back

Two wires need to be switched around on the wiring harness in one of the connectors. Not a problem just compare the wiring diagrams from the two cars.

Make sure to get the throttle linkage from the donor 968 as well. If you don't have an S you will need the ignitor module and harness as well

Fuel lines from the 944S bolt right up along with all the heater hoses.

Other than that pretty much drop in and go.
Oil cooler should come with the engine and mounts right up.

Wasn't too expensive 2500 for the complete engine with all accessories complete to bellhousing with harness DME and all the items mentioned above. Low mileage engine from Germany. The car is my friends, he bought a few 3 lb lobsters and we had a good weekend playing with the Porsche.
Things only get expensive when you pay others to do it for you.

Todd

And I can vouch for Todd as a do-it-yourselfer. his basement is full of parts and trinkets from various Porsche models... not that there's anything wrong with that. He had the parts I needed and a fair price. I bet with all the parts in the basement, he could build a Frankenstein-ish hybrid Porsche.

So stock, how much HP does a 968 engine put out? I know the stock 944S has 190. Will dropping a 968 engine in a 944S produce more, less, or the same amount of HP?

Wish I saw all this before I spent a few grand rebuilding my 944S :P

But on a good note, I finally got my oversized valve guides and the machine shop should have them in and the head ready for me by the middle of next week. *yay*

Interesting project! I bet their are many 944S body's out there with bad engines too! I considered one before buying my 86 944, but it was too rough!

951 is stock 220 HP right? So the next quesiton would be if you mod up the 968 engine, would it surpass a modded 951?

Also, could you chip it with a 968 chip or would you need something custom?

Curious now. Been searching for wrecked 968's for like a week just to experiment a little in the shop.

You can easily surpass the 968 engine with a 951 by using simple bolt-on mods. To really push the HP out of a 968 engine you would have to turbo charge it. It cheaper and alot easier to boost the HP of a 951 engine. You can even convert the 2.5 turbo to a 2.8 and really do some damage!!!

I duuno,
I don't buy into the 2.8 thing. what it does is is increase the stroke=higher mechanical advantage= larger distance turned through for higher torque at lower RPM. But, the tradeoff is the ability for the motor to rev and produce the same torque and HP numbers up on top. Since Hp=RPS*torque (in nM)/746, the Hp is extremely dependant on RPM, therefore decrease torque up high= less power. Although I haven't seen dyno charts for a 2.8, I bet it shows a ton of torque down low, peaks quickly and starts to taper off fairly quickly. So my suggestion make a 2.2 KIT! It would just cost a ton of money to get the motor to safely rotate at about 9000RPM, but that's the way to do it (ex, the honda engines we hate so much go off this principle) !

Sorry guys, i just tend to overthink things. I have a habit of going on tangents on this board!

your right. larger displacement puts the torque down low but hondas don't boast 515 ftlb of torque either! I'll post a dyno chart later.

The s2000 may make alot of hp but you have to go to 8000 before you get any at all!

Hmmm $6000 to get 300 bhp at the wheels for my S2, or 325 for a 968.

My thinking on Supercharged S2/968 against 951 is like this :

1) S2 and 968 have big engines with lots of low down torque

2) Boost from those superchargers is only 7psi so hopefully engine life won't be too compromised. Boost comes in low down so power curve is very flat.

3) The car would be very unusual

Should be unbeatable at autocross? What do you think?
