custom exhaust work Any real benefit?

So I just picked up an 86 944. PO told me the car had a gutted cat. Then when I put it up on the lift I noticed the front pipe wasn't factory. Hopefully the pics do a good job of showing whats going on. Should I go back to factory or leave it alone?

I think those are MSDS headers.
They've been around for a long time, but NO ONE has ever produced dyno results to my knowledge to see if they're worth anything besides a "cool factor".

I've heard racers say they just make the car louder, but not faster, but the concept of long-tube headers should be the opposite of that...
Where are you located?

What's with the white **** at the collector flange?

it almost looks like the white corrosion you'd find on a battery terminal.

The white stuff is an exhaust sealant. Looks like instead of replacing the gasket, they doped it up with crap that cost 10 times as much in an effort to quiet it.

When exhaust headers are installed with larger exhaust pipes, high flow cat and high flow muffler - the resulting performance improvement is noticeable. Couple those with performance chip, cone filter and lightweight flywheel - then you're really into something better. Butt dyno approved
