I got a bit of a chuckle out of this.
A friend of mine just bought a 1986 951, choosing it over a 1982 924 for the following reason:

Very steep learning curve ahead.
In some respects 944/951 is easier - parts are easier to find never heard any aspect of Porsche maintenance refered to as "cheap" though AFJuvat

I'd still take a 944 over an 924 any day.
Had two of them. Were fun to drive but the engine and injection system sucked big time.

FYI: The 931 (924 Turbo) is one of the most expensive Porsches to maintain, according to my mechanic. Granted, your friend is talking about a 924 n/a, but still, it was surprising for me to hear this.
