Power Steering Not So Good Going Left

Sometimes, more often recently, When turning left I get a catch in the power steering where it stops working and steering gets hard. With a little twitch of the wheel it comes back and the power assist is there again. This only happens turning left and it doesn't happen every time. It's a little unsettling when you are trying to carve the perfect curve down the entrance ramp to the highway!
I took the power steering belt off and drove for a few days. Turning was smooth all the way across the rack.
The rack was rebuilt three years ago to cure a bunch of leaks and the tank was replaced last year. Is it likely that there is a little dirt lodged somewhere and is there anything like seafoam that I can run thru the system to clean things out? Or am I looking at a bigger problem and should I start looking for a rebuilt rack?

Thanks,
Jon

I'd spend the ten bucks on a R e n n b a y rebuild kit for the pump, and replace the reservoir and suction hose and see what happens.

Reservoir is new, suction line is new. Pump is quiet and doesn't leak. What I don't understand is why it only does this going left.
What I really don't understand is how this whole power steering thing works. When I rebuilt the rack I spent hours scratching my head trying to understand how fluid flowed, how this thing was valved to provide the assist only when turning the wheel but not when holding the wheel steady. Never could figure it out.....

No chance a good flushing will fix this? I don't want to replace the rack unless absolutely necessary. Good racks are hard to come by and I just had the front end aligned!!!

Today's update. We flushed 2 1/2 qts of Dexron thru the system this morning by removing the return line to the reservoir and diverting into a pail with the engine running and the steering going full left/right. Seems like it worked. Drove about 10 miles with power steering both ways!!
The Porsche gods have smiled upon me today......

I have this exact problem. Has your issue returned or is all still good?

The left steering problem has returned. I tried a second flush with no improvement. I replaced all the seals on this rack 3 years ago and it doesn't leak a drop. It's breaking my heart to think I may have to replace it.

The valves that control the amount of assist are located in the spinning head of the rack, the part that the intermediate shaft actually connects to.

It sounds like one of those valves is sticking on your unit. Resealing/Rebuilding the unit isn't going to fix this, unless you use some type of cleaner on that head unit.

My experience is that those valves are very sensitive, and most of the racks I have had/bought have left quite a bit to be desired as to how good the power assist is. It's really a crapshoot, IMO.

I might try removing and cleaning the head unit before I go looking for a rebuilt rack. But nobody has been able to tell me what to use as a cleaner so I gotta figure that out.

If the valve/head unit can be removed from the rack, I would put it in an ultrasonic cleaner. Amazing how well they clean things.
