replace hood pad insulation

Hey guys I'm gonna replace my hood pads and have 2 questions. I've done a search on the board, and see a couple of posts about it, but not the info I'm looking for.

#1: How much of the old stuff that's left do I have to remove? All that's really there anymore is old dried up adhesive. No pad or pieces really left. Thought it (dried glue residue)would scrape off, but it would need more like a sanding to remove it.

#2: What adhesive to use to install new pad? Done all kind of searches. 3M Spray #08080 or #08090; 3M weatherstripping adhesive in a tube; Wurth high temp spray adhesive?

Want to do it right and not have it fall off or burst into flames from the adhesive. Most of the stuff I'm looking at is anywhere from 10.00 - 15.00 each so I don't want to experiment with too many different cans for such a limited use.

Anybody done it? Any thoughts? Always open to yall's comments and experience.

Porsche Crest

I need to do this project also, however I still have the old crumbling pad in place. Real PITA when working on the engine and I bump my head into in then cr*p falls all over me and the engine!

Do some pads come with adhesive? Maybe already applied as in peel and stick sort of thing? I have also heard it is okay to remove the pad and run without it, certainly the cheapest way to go!

BTW finally got to my battery project, pulled the battery - found only light surface rust (thank you Lord) - paint thinner/wire brush/sandpaper/ shopvac - three coats of Rustoliume - let dry for two beers - drop in battery mat from Pelican - drop in battery - felt stupid for putting off an important although very easy little job for so long.

Performance products sells the foil lined padding - a little more durable that the waffle foam stuff that came with the car. - yes it is peel and stick.

you can also get the stuff from and auto parts store and cut it yourself

Mine doesn't even have it- last owner just ripped it off. Do you really need it?

I'm thinking of removing it and running without it. I have heard that some cars run so hot that it can discolor the hood paint. However I also have heard from a few 944 folks who run without it and have no problem.

Not sure what to do.

I have the foil lined from performance the AFjuvat mentioned.

It came with adhesive backing, and was pre cut to fit. It's been on for over a year and is still holding.

Getting the old glue off was a major pain in the but. I wanted to use a heat gun, but I had just purchased a $4500 paint job and did not want to risk damaging the hood in anyway. So I scraped it off with a plastic scraper. Then used bumber sticker remover to get the rest off.

Leave it bare (like mine is) - that way you can see the burn marks better when the plug wires go bad!!!

I don't think mine has ever had it. It is very clean on the underside of my hood. The car is an 88', so it must not have been put on.
