What do you think?

Does anyone know how much it would cost me to replace the clutch on a 1983 porsche 944?

Do it yourself?
Or at a shop?

I called a few P-Car shops around my area and they all gave the same range of prices. $2,800-$3,400.

Did it myself (with some help) for the cost of parts and pizza. I did buy a used flywheel and had it resurfaced and then balanced with the pressure plate. Total cost to do it on my own was less than $1,000.

Clutch kit is around $500

Other WYIT stuff... maybe clutch fork bearings? They're cheap. You may want to swap stuff on the trans while it's out, maybe a Only944 linkage setup. And repack CV axles. Nothing really expensive unless you fold and tow it to a shop.

DIY is your only economical option.

It is a 2 weekend project -----or you can pay the pros to do it in 10 to 14 hours and a lot of $$$$$$.

I used this info:
Clutch Replacement Procedure

The value of the car will not increase if you take it to a shop.

if you're properly equipped you can do it really fast if you just pull the engine instead of the trans/tube.

with a helper on the bell housing bolts i once pulled 2 944 engines, swapped between the 2 cars and reinstalled and got running in about 8 hours.

the clutch is never more accessible than when the engine is hanging on the crane!

The next time I do mine, it will be this way. I'll pull the engine and knock out a few other items while I have it out.

Can anyone tell me if this tool will work if the waterpump is installed? Is there room to use it without removing the radiator, waterpump, etc.? Or would the 90 degree version be better?

7.3 I cant remove that %$#@!! thermostat snap ring! What tool do I use?

Removing the 944 thermostat snap ring is extremely difficult due to its location and configuration. Ron Olsen has suggested a particular tool: Snap On SRPC9045A Snap Ring Pliers (45 degree with .09" tips). It costs approximately USD $34.

Automotion also carries 90 degree snap ring pliers (around USD $45).

I use a very basic snap ring pliers that will "compress" the WP snap ring--45 degree bend works best for me. The WP stays installed. The snap ring pliers must have very hardened steel tips or the tips will bend. The tool needs to compress and loosen the snap ring held in place by corrosion.

I am not familiar with the snapon tool pictured. It looks like it may be designed to "expand" the WP snap ring---and that will not work.

I do not remove the radiator on the 924S

John,

Could you post a picture of the tool, or at least the manufacturer info?

On 2nd thought maybe the tool shown can be configured to either compress/expand by removing/replacing the pivot and crossing over the two halves?

Do I feel lucky, should I take a $35 gamble?

did you pull/lift or drop from below?

I pulled the tranny and TT as I had just finished putting this all together and getting the car running great, and did not relish tearing it all apart.

so far I have not pulled an engine on a 944, NA or turbo. dropping it on a 911 is just too easy.

a couple guys told me they drop the motor. I suspect if you remove enough stuff you can lift out the top. gotta find more uses for the cherry picker I bought to justify all the tool expenses....

I may try that when I have to do the RMS on the 944S. I'd go ahead and do that now, if not for the dead line to get the full suspension done on my 951 for the first DE mid April...

I have a couple. If you ever plan to work on the AC compressor front pulley and clutch you might consider a better quality.

The Harbor Freight will work if the pump snap ring is not frozen by corrosion.

John,
I have a set like that and my hands are too wimpy to compress them! I like the 8" handles and more leverage on the Snap-on's, but is there room to get them in there?

8.5" would be no problem.

Time to get the show on the road. Is it the 90degree or the 45degree tool that works best if the wp is installed?

Here's a set of regular cheap-ass snap ring pliers I got at Advance Auto and bent to make them work. The bend halfway down the handle is necessary...
