Porsche Crest engine code M44/05

Courious -Can somebody tell me what the engine code M44/05 stands for - it is just above the engine number - but i wanna know what it means - does it tell you its a 2.5 or a 2.7 L? or does it tell you something when / which year it was produced???

Also was there ever a 8V - 3.0L engine? ( not the 16V)

And dont flame me for a stupid question - reason for asking i saw a engine in a local yard and they were not sure what it was.......strange but true

Thanks guys

Frankydoom

Porsche Crest

Okay, I'm a educated idiot but here is my best shot... I have four books on the 924/944/968 series and as best as I can remember...

The 3.0 was introduced in the 1989 S2 model with the 16V head and never had a 8V.

Trivia - I think the 968 turbo prototype that never went into production had a eight valve head on a 3.0 block.

Ok, here goes (from Peter Morgan's 'Original Porsche 924/944/968'):

1985.5 - 1987 model years (2.5 8v):

M44/05 - Europe, manual
M44/06 - Europe, automatic
M44/07 - USA, manual
M44/08 - USA, automatic

(The 82-85 engines were M44/01,2,3 & 4)

So M44/05 tells you the engine type but not the exact year. I think the 3rd digit of the engine number should be the letter code for the year (F, G, or H for 85, 86 & 87).

An '88 2.5 would be M44/09 or 10 (manual or auto), an 89 2.7 M44/12 or 13. The 3.0 was only available with the 16v head in the S2, engine type M44/41.

Regards, Alex
