What do I all need?
Alrighty, My son's turbo limped home the other day. Just some background on it... 75,000 miles on an early turbo (one piece crossover). I haven't tried it yet but he said it sounded like there were "bolts and nuts" loose when he was putting in the clutch. The noise/feeling went away when he was in gear and moving but when depressing the clutch it would come back. I am guessing bearing or clutch but never-the-less I will assume I will be tearing it all the way down to the clutch so what do I all need to replace while I am in there? Anyone have any advise that maybe I don't know on how to make the process less painful? Thanks again for the help. Ply

My Advice:
1) Get it on your lift to make your job easier. 2) If you do the rear main seal, make sure you do it right the first time. Get the tool, or make a good one and do it right, or you will be doing it all over again very soon. 3) Getting the crossover bolts off is tricky, and you will need to do this with the one-piece crossover. Get a good pivoting ratchet handle for that. 4) Look at the various writeups for doing this job. I think I used kgross' writeup, and it worked well.

So you are saying that I can get the bolt without intake removal?
I do want to do it all while apart so main seal will be one

Sounds like a bad throwout bearing, or the fork has broken, and it's tearing up the diaphragm fingers on the pressure plate.

No. You need to remove the intake - all of that stuff. Even doing that, you are going to have fun removing that lower bolt on the crossover on the intake side.

Yup, throw out bearing is what I’m assuming it is I’m just going to try and do everything with it while I’m in there. They had been rattling for couple weeks now so I’ve just kind a wait. So the way it sounds right now I’m good with a clutch, throw out bearing, rear main seal…possible clutch fork, pressure plate....

Guide sleeve, needle bearings for fork, new pin for fork, new bolts for PP and Flywheel, maybe change out the clutch soft line while in there, do the vacuum hoses under intake manifold, get some exhaust manifold crush gaskets, shims for wastegate, donut gasket(s) for exhaust, maybe ISV rubber mounts....
Oh, and pilot bearing for crankshaft...

Mark, your son's 944 Turbo is worth saving at almost any cost.
It's a really nice specimen and I know he put a lot of love and sweat into it, so please just fix it! |

I cannot add anything useful to this thread as I couldn’t get past the title. “What do I all need?” sounds like you picked some random words and tried to form a question with them
