Self-repairing 944... I don't know how, I don't know why

When I got the car, basically everything electric inside it didn't work. After a year I had everything doing as it should, with one exception. The air con was totally dead. No sign of life was evident in any part of it, to the extent that I was seriously considering removing the entire thing to save some weight and give the passenger some extra leg-room.
Then last week as I was head-first under the dash trying to clean some earths (I had been in Europe for 6 weeks, the cover had blown off the car, it had poured with rain, most of which seems to have take up residence in the passenger side floor) I happened to bump the aircon fan knob and bugger me if it didn't burst into life! Not only does the fan now work, the compressor seems to be cutting in and out on demand and while it looks like it needs re-gassing, it does seem to be 100% alive again. Of course, being the middle of winter, aircon is of no use to me at all, so I can just hope that whatever it was that made it work again will continue this when summer gets here...

You better be praising God! And check your sunroof drain pipes! Godspeed and Good Luck!

God, Allah, Buddha, Mohammed and anything else I could think of!

Checked the sunroof drains and they are fine, so that's not the problem...

Kiwi,
If yours is a late 944, check the battery tray. They have been known to rust out and leak water over the DME and into the passenger foot well. Not sure if it applies to earlys

It's a very early 944 and there was a big hole under the battery, but I've had it fixed, so it's coming in from elsewhere

These cars do not repair themselves. You have an intermittent problem, which will surface again at the worst possible moment... Next summer, for example.

And, the most likely cause for water on the passenger side is a leak in the battery box. You may have fixed a hole, but the source of the water is still the battery box.

You are quite right about the aircon, it will fail again...

The leak, I'm pretty sure isn't the battery box. After fixing the hole I filled it with water and then with the glovebox and DME removed, got into the car with a torch and looked very closely for any sign of dampness, and I'm convinced it ti totally water-tight there.
