AC compressor unit question

Hi everyone
Some of you have been helping me with my AC unit problem which i sort of solved when i simply disconnected the cable to the unit - which allowed the pulley to spin freely with the engine running and the AC switched off on the dashboard.

However, are there any clues as to what could be wrong with the unit if, when switched off, the pulley is locked solid? Where should i be looking?

thanks for your patience.

Maybe I should start another thread on this subject, but here goes. How hard is it to rebuild these units? I'm sure mine is simply the seals leaking from not being used in for-EVER.. I have the service manuals and have read over the process. Has anyone here actually rebuilt one of these units for R134A. I'd like to hear personal experiences.

This is the very "basic" instruction link:

However, only a pro would begin knowing all the pitfalls.

Did you check for an electrical problem that could have kept the A/C clutch wire energized? Maybe one of the relays is stuck? I would make sure the electrical is working properly before embarking on a compressor rebuild.

When i was refitting a new fanbelt and testing the compressor under the car i did try starting the car without the AC relay. It made no difference. Still the compressor was locked. Would that indicate a faulty relay?

Check the clutch wire with a volt meter or a test light.

What year do you have? The clutch coil sounds to be hot all the time, it shouldn't. Probably wired that way by a PO?

I've rebuilt several compressors, the toughest part with the 10P 15 series is finding valve plates if there is low suction and discharge. Resealing is pretty easy.
