Lifters - question to replace?
When hydraulic lifters lose their "spring" does this mean they need to be replaced?
|
Not necessarily. From my experience sludge can build up if oil changes lapse. If several are noisy then change oil more frequently. If it's just 1 with high mileage then it could be bad. Highly unlikely.

probably.
but if your getting a sound like lifter noises in a 944, the first place i would look is the cheesehead on the front of the cam sprocket. i know of 3 944s that all the lifters were replaced, and were slighly soft, but the noise didn't go away, and it ended up being the cheesehead on the front of the cam. |

I have since been advised by a local 924 supplier in south Florida that they should be replaced. I will likely get 2 refurbished ones. Thanks. |
I see no need to replace lifters, "springy" or not...there is nothing inside them to "go wrong".
They probably just need to be cleaned thoroughly (maybe ultrasonically?) and fed fresh clean oil again... |
I have heard of the spring inside the lifter can crack thus fail. But usually the tiny hole gets plugged which causes the lifter to fail.

lifters are also like mega cheap. i think when i did mine, i paid like 8 bucks a lifter?
|
Must not have been new ones...they are over $200/each nowawadays :)
|
If you buy them in the $160 Porsche box, they are. OEM INA (in the INA box) lifters for those engines are about $40.
|
I know for the S you can buy INA VW lifters (from the 16V Golf), they probably have VW lifters for the NA's too, if the S doesn't work...
I have some used lifters if anyone is in need. $5 ea and shipping. |

Same part for the 951 as the 924S and 944N/A. Porsche part number is 92810531108 for all of them.
INA part number is 122-08024434 at Parts-Geek (remove the dash in the name for the website). $39 |
