Alternator removal : checking Clark's
If I recall, Clark's Garage says to do this to get the alternator belt off:
Loosen turnbuckle retaining bolt a few times Pry between the compressor and "the block" While holding the pry bar, remove the turnbuckle retaining bolt and rotate AC compressor towards the engine belt is off ... I'm not getting this. What is the block - the engine block? I assume the other bolt for the AC has to be loosened. why only loosen the turnbuckle retaining bolt a few times at first if it comes out anyways? Yes I just dove into this and am discovering my misunderstandings... Last edited by Bukowski; 09-10-2016 at 09:10 AM.. |

Loosen the bolt securing the tensioner rod to the AC compressor.
Loosen the bolt or nut securing the tensioner rod to the bottom of the engine. Loosen (just barely) the bolts from which the AC compressor hangs from the bracket (one above the AC clutch assembly, the other is at the back of the compressor, best accessed via the wheel whell) Use 2 wrenches against eachother to loosen the jam nut on each side of the tensioner rod. Spin jam nuts all the way towards the tensioner rod eyelets to get them out of the way, and then turn the tensioner rod center body with a wrench so that the eyelets come closer to eachother, slackening the belt...it will take many turns. Apply beer to face. |

Alright, it's out. Hoo boy, it'd be nice if I could add to that Clark's article.
Now here's a dumb question: I can't find torque values in the SM - I found adjustment of the belt and installation, but none of those tables.... anyone know where it is? I looked through once already.... Oh also : blue Loctite on the small wire nut? Looks like what mine has... I guess no dielectric grease because it can mess up the internals if it gets sucked in... AND ... who has the gasket? Can't find it on Pelican. Last edited by Bukowski; 09-10-2016 at 03:47 PM.. |

No torque values - just "flick of the wrist" with the wrench is all it takes.
But what gasket are you talking about ? |

Gasket : 928 603 135 03
I erred : p. 27-25 has the torque for the M10 fastening screws : 45 Nm ... I also noticed the reason to leave the belt tensioner as found : special tool 9201 is used to tension the belt differently depending on AC or not. |

a quick off-the-top-of-my-head follow up:
first a BIG warning - not from me - from Bosch! Battery has to be fully charged. they also tell you to do an open circuit voltage test. I had my battery on the tender, so I was good. the upper alternator bolt is so long it bumps the fan shroud. all fan shroud screws had to be removed to shift the shroud - but complete removal unecessary - it gave enough wiggle room. the upper alternator bolt was on there hella tight - had to use a breaker bar (the outer half of the handle from my floor jack). alternator had to be really worked off the mount after that. i used gentle taps from a mallet only towards the very end. oddly, the new alternator slipped on fine. used the Harbor Freight alternator/battery tester, got a "normal" alternator. the battery was fully charged. instrument cluster showed battery between 12 and 14. after some driving, dipped to 12, then back up again. seems good. why they don't give you a gasket, I don't know. I see now its special order - Pelican ought to have it in stock- hint hint. and thank you V2!
