Mr. Regular does *not* like the 944
I really enjoy the YouTube show Regular Car Reviews, but they were not kind in their review of the 944s. Not that I am surprised, it's not their kind of car. But he was pretty harsh. I can't help but wonder if there are issues with this particular car, as any 944s really takes off in the higher RPM range.

I had a friend who didn't care for the 944 because he found the engine rather charmless. If he was going to have a four-cylinder sports car, he said, he'd want a "small, rev-happy" unit that made all its power in the upper reaches of the RPM range (a-la Honda S2000).
I can understand that, and it seems from his comments that Mr. Regular might feel the same. But then, plenty of commenters say he was cruel in his review of the Honda, too. I want to chalk this up to a case of "it has a Porsche badge; it should be a revelation and instead, it's merely 'good.'" |
Never understood the huge following behind that channel. The lack of real content would be justified if the videos were at least funny, but they aren't.

It took me a long, long time to warm up to his content. My friends tell me I talk exactly like him, and have the same sense of humor, which is patently absurd; when I tell a joke, it actually makes sense.
BUT... yeah, I've warmed on Regular Car Reviews, partly because he's gotten much better. That said, he seems to regurgitate Wikipedia a lot, and if he had a lackluster experience in a 944S, he probably doesn't know how to drive it proper. :p |

My 944 engine was rather charmless until I mounted the WILKS chip, and the weltermeister throttle cam.......completely different car, and now lively, and free revving.

Yeah, what 30+ year old platform is still out there in the range of 944 numbers? Datsun Z cars? Not so much. VW Siroccos? Nope. Mazda RX7's? Nope again.

I would argue (imho sadly) that most of the driveable 944s fall into the category shown in the review... and that is because rather than maintain a car, people throw on rimz, a sub woofer, LEDs and on and on. They try to make it more modern... detaching it from its correct place and time.
Here's the thing. If someone is experiencing happiness in a 944... that, in itself, is great and usually fleeting. That car's owner loves it. I can respect that. |
Poppycock: The 944 feels like a brick **** house compared to any 80's car out there and is galvanized to boot. Camaros were front heavy sleds with crude handling, corvettes were overweight and handled crudely, too, Z's were too light in the rear and flimsy to boot and I wasn't impressed with Miatas either, seemed to heavy for the power plant. Maybe a Mits 3000 or a Stealth was nimble, but still not properly balanced.

he's right you know. NA 944s are pretty damn slow and there isnt much you can do about it.

They weren't slow in 1982 when they came out, and the 944S certainly wasn't in '86.Compare to other sporting cars available then, not cars of today. They were geared for European motorways, there was no speed limit on Autobahns back then and you could drive them flat out thereon. Driving down to the Nurburgring on the E61 in 1989 or so, I held my 924S at an indicated 130mph all the way. Only car to pass me was a BMW 3.0CSL. And then when it came to track driving, it was pretty peerless for a volume produced 2+2 car of its engine size back then.

All I have to say is send me all of your "unloved" 914's, 924's, 944's, and 968's and I'll give them all a good home. Feel free to toss in any "unloved" 911,912, or 356's my way too. I'll take them all free of charge.. ;-)

I agree, compared with the new stuff, ya but in the early 80's they were pretty impressive cars.
My automotive's teacher in high school told us about his best buddy getting a Ford Model T for his first car back when they were young. His buddy planned a trip to the US and invited him to come along. He said he was very disappointed with the trip when he got back home because buddy drove so fast they didn't get a chance to see any scenery. He drove 30 MPH all the way there and back!! That's how it goes, our expectations change. The 944 is just as awesome as it ever was seen through 1983 eyes! The amazing thing about them to me is they are still with us and they may not win now but they give many of the latest and greatest a serious run for their money! |
Its funny how folks dislike any 80's back supercar's, or sports cars, I get stares when I drive my 951, hell I get stares when I drive the family 66 mgb. I've been thinking about upgrading my MB coupe but they've rounded the vehicle so much... And they're now using this crap piano (glossy) black interior trim which attracts dust like crazy. I think I'll keep my 2012 unless I find a great deal on a SL500-550, although my wife wants me to get the new Maserati Ghibli (what a gal!!). Anyone got $65k laying around? |

Ok, so someone I never heard of doesnt like 944s, I have seen this before. First of all Most of the specimeens out there barely run or dont run at all. The 80s WAS a while ago folks. It took me YEARS to straighten out my ride to the point where it performs like a champion. So It being a semi free country I will agree that other people are free to believe thier delusions. Further, someone who is used to a differnt power curve might not be able to hit the shift points and get the most out of the engine. I forgive thier ignorance as thier opinion can only be swayed by experiencing and driving a exeplary specimen. Good luck with that one and no, You aint driving mine.

Actually, whilst agreeing wholeheartedly with SolReaver, there are some pretty nice looking examples beginning to appear at classic car shows in England, so good ones do still exist, albeit not many. For example, there are only less than 100 924S left on the UK roads( quite a few off the road but still registered however so some of those might re-emerge as values increase to the point where its worth spending some money on them).

As an owner of a 951, having redone 3 944's I think there's a little bit of "the Never Ending Story" associated with trying to get these great cars to where, ideally, we'd like them to be. It's the challenge to constantly improve them without making them ugly that appeals to us. I'm still restoring my 951 barn find and I'm ending up addressing virtually EVERY one of the failure or repair issues you read about on this forum. Bruised knuckles, cat litter and a colorful vocabulary are all side-affects that invariably become a product of this kind of project. I love it.

A stock, well maintained 944.. pretty special. Of course they're slow, but overall they ooze engineering excellence and phenomenal build quality with comfort, practicality and very good looks. I've driven a lot of cars, from vintage to exotics, and a crisp low mileage '83 944 to me is still one of the most fun and memorable. |

One small comment to ensure complete honesty and keep my integrity in place, I really do need a '87 to '89 911 one day. As soon as I get two young men through college. |
Looks like a red 944 Turbo is in the pipeline for his channel. It looks like it's in good condition too.
