Early Manual Transmission swapped into a late model??

My automatic transmission has went bad in my 1988 Porsche 944 N/A. I have a 1985 (early) 944 N/A as a parts car. I know some things can interchange and some cannot. Can I take the manual transmission out of the early and put it in the late? Would this work? Would I need any additional parts for this swap?

The trans will fit/work but you won't have a speedometer drive signal.

How much do you want to spend?

It could easily cost as much as buying the right transmission to begin with.

The 85 trans has a mechanical cable speedometer drive, the 88 is electronic.

Are you saying it's gonna cost a lot to make the speedmeter work? What would I need to make it work?

Um, not so fast. The '85 probably has a case that is machined to take the speedo sender. Take a look at it, where the speedo sender goes. If you find a steel plug with an allen socket head, you're in luck. The plug can be removed, and the sender's needed pinion, drive sprocket, bushing, and sender installed, easy task -- perhaps simply swapped from your current transmission. Alternatively I can provide the parts as good used ones.

Send a PM to Pelican users "gravesjeg" (Maryland) and/or "plyhammer" (Ohio)...I'd bet one of them could hook you up with a late trans for that sort of price.

A regular (open diff) 944 transmission in good shape shouldn't cost much more than $100-$150.

I think I'm just going to swap the transmission in and get a GPS powered speedometer.. Seems like the easiest thing to do.

That sounds way harder than just finding the right transmission and bolting it in.
