Driving with hatch ajar / open

Silly question I know - any clever ideas out there for preventing exhaust getting pulled in through the hatch when driving with e.g. a load of lumber and the hatch secured by ratcheting straps?

I already tried windows-down and blower on high. It helps, but...

I'm imagining a foam block that gets pinched in the hatch, but that'd be inconvenient to store...

Damn near impossible because of the nature of the airflow around the car when moving. Lumber? Borrow someone's pickup truck. LOL

Depending on the size of lumber you're carrying, you could post a WTB ad here for a 944 "ski rack" which will carry 2x4s...
Though if you're careful you can get an 8' 2x4 in the car by putting one end way down in the passenger foot well and leaning the seats back/down.

I had an 84, and the hatch gave way on the highway, I drove down the high way for a few miles then tried to close that puppy. No luck. I found a gas station that sold rope. I used that, and it got me home to fix the faulty hatch. Hey at least it made some down force spoiler action!

This is definitely a problem! The old doctor I bought my first 944 from had put a new hatch seal on and adjusted the latches excessively tight(I thought). When I asked him what the car was like with the sun roof open he replied very quickly "I don't ever use it!"

Well I quickly found out why! If the hatch is adjusted any other way it sucks in fumes bad! AND! If you open the sunroof the same thing happens. Not sure if the fumes come in the hatch with the roof open or just get sucked in the roof opening. The only way it is tolerable to have the roof open is to roll the windows down!

Now I have a second 944 and it is exactly the same!

I'm thinking the cure is to swap in a TDI diesel engine and it will stink less!

This thread is off the original topic, but I have the same problem with my 944 S2 sucking fumes in when the 'Targa roof' is open. I'm wondering if the problem is not with the fumes coming in the lid seal, but coming up through the gear lever seal on the tunnel. The leather boot on mine keeps coming undone when I reverse, and I noticed yesterday that there is a rubber boot under it that seals to a flange on the hole through the top of the tunnel. The rubber seal on my car was not snapped over the flange. With the roof open a negative pressure would be formed in the cabin and suck fumes up through the hole.
