944 Belt & Tune-up Video

Hi,

I noticed a video offered by a p-car parts vendor ... it claims to be about 60 minutes in length and covers timing belt installation/tensioning (among other things).

Has anyone seen this video? If so, did they cover how to use the timing belt tensioning tool or do they dodge the whole thing like the haynes manual?

If this video doesn't really have the goods, I'm thinking Mr SoCal and Mr Juvat should join forces and produce the ultimate 944 projects video. Maybe throw in a piece by Mr. FRWilke on fuel injection to boot!

Regards,

DL

My mechanic has video tape of him changing timing belts.

He video tapes a lot of procedures, so he can look over them and learn and also for reference.

He won't video tape a tranny job though - must take too long.

I saw some of the timing belt video and it wouldn't be good for use by others. I asked him about the possibilty of doing a more indepth video on timing belt changes/re-tensions - I wanted to see if people here would want to see such a thing.

I'll have to talk with him and see if he will still do this.....

Thumbs up

I have the video and yes IMHO it covers the timing belt change and tensioner adjustment well.
However if SoCal wants to make a video I will loan my car (save me a few $$$ in labor Vs taking it to a mechanic)
The video would not cost any less but it would be much more intertaining.
Todd and I could do play by play interspersed with Monty python scenes.
Step one, remove belt cover.
Step two, jack up car
Step three,THERRE IS NO STEP THREE!

Bringith forth thine holy torqueith wrench and setith it in accordance with thee divine shopith manuel.

NO ONE EXPECTS THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION!

I probably purchased the same tape thru ebay about 2 years ago. The quality was poor - appeared to be static from overcopying of a VHS tape. Not even "Shadetree Mechanic" or "Horsepower TV" type quality, and stilted dialog. Although he does show how to use the tension gauge, you're still SOL without the gauge. The $25 the tape cost me convinced me to get a certified Porsche mechanic to do the work (also had waterpump upgrade, leaking cam seal, balance seals, main seal, new cam gear, etc done at the same time).
At least I learned about the belts, but nothing else.

I would not buy anything off ebay but that is just me.
Sounds like I got the same tape the profesor has however mine is an original and the picture quality is great.
This is not the first time I have heard that the pirated hack job off ebay is poor quality. If your going to buy one I suggest you get an original.

I also have to admit after watching the tape that I would have a P-car mechanic do the job

Sometimes, life's lessons are expensive. I was new to ebay - I was gullible. I'm so ashamed....

Even then, I did learn two things - 1) about the p-car, 2) about ebay rip-offs

Been actually thinking about doing a phto tech article about the belt job. Never considered doing a video though (does that mean I get video groupies??)

I am getting ready to do the 15K retension on my car. Will see what I can do about roping spousal unit to hold camera steady.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

I've picked up a few things and have been very happy with them. Jr golf sets (for kids), radiator shrouds for my CR250 (at LESS than 1/4th price) in excellent condition, and various dirt bike parts and I have yet to be dissappointed.

Buyer beware, and know what it is you are looking for......pictures, help, too.
