Whining sound and clunking front end.

Hi guys, 2 problems here.... (1988 944 2.5 Auto)

1) When I start my car there is a terrible whining sound, it goes away as the car warms up. Very loud and annoying.

2) Weird sound coming from front driver wheel. Something seems loose or out of whack. Makes a clunk when going on speedbumps or taking turns.

Thank you for your help.

Hello Jackson - have you checked the fan belt for the whining/squeaking sound? Are you able to lift the car and check the suspension? I'm attaching a link to our site's DIY tech articles on the 944 platform if you need any advice on future maintenance or repairs.

I had the same clunking issue. It turned out to be a frozen shock strut. Push down on the front corners to see if they go down and rebound normally. That's how I found it.

1. Your whining sound may be your power steering pump. These sound awful if there is air in the system. Do you have any leaks? How is the fluid level?

2. In regards to the clunking issue. Jack the car up and check the ball joints, tie rod ends, sway bar bushings, and wheel bearings. I had a similar issue, and mine also turned out to be a strut as indicated in the previous post. But it is easy enough to check the other items before you start to pull the struts.

Good Luck. Let us know what you find.

I had the same problem and was a frozen shock strut.
