noise during coasting throttle / zero acceleration?

Hi everyone

I've had my 85 944 for 6 months now. As the 6 months have gone by I've noticed an increasing amount of noise when the car is at coasting throttle (not accelerating, not decelerating). It is most pronounced above 80km/h. It's hard to describe the noise but sounds a little like a noisy rotating sound. There's no screeching or metal on metal noise. Anyone got an idea where to start looking? As soon as I accelerate or take my foot off the throttle, the noise goes away.

This is in fifth gear only? Or does it happen in fourth also?

Automatic transmission or Manual? - could be a differential bearing, or the flex disk if it's automatic.

sorry about the late reply. The noise is most prevalent in 5th but can be heard in 4th... It's manual transmission.

Is it more of a whine? These cars seem to have a rather loud gearbox, mine definitely has gear whine in 4th and 5th. No "expensive" noises though. Had a sound that I thought was a bearing going but it disappeared when I put a new set of tires on.

I wouldn't say it's a whine... but my definition may be different - it sounds kind of like a roller bearing under load without grease (my impression)

. I should have mentioned that there's a clunk when I let the clutch in and out... although I'm not altogether sure the two sounds are related. I've booked it in for Monday with one of the Sydney porsche workshops as I've got limited time at the moment. I'll post the outcome just in case someone else is having similar symptoms at some time. Thanks for all the replies.

Ah, probably not good then. When I said whine, I meant a much quieter version of the sound reverse makes. The clutch clunk could be a dying center section (I think). Hope things work out well, thanks for promising to keep us updated.

Does the noise go away when you push the clutch in - if it does it could be the thrust bearing, I had the same problem took a $600 rebuild of the gearbox to fix it as the shoip found a lot else wrong when they were carrying out there delicate operation

It's certainly quieter when the clutch is in... I assumed it had something to do with the fact that it's decelerating. Even with the clutch out, the noise is quieter when decelerating. Maybe it's a combination of problems.

Hi guys. Got the car back from the mechanic late last week. Much smoother ride now. Hard to put a finger on what fixed the problem as he found many... He replaced the clutch plate with a spring clutch, new bearings on the torque tube and right rear wheel. The left rear suspension mounts were totally rusted out, so he replaced all of them. Had to order the bits from germany so it took a while... Anyway, the noise is gone completely, along with a few other clunks and bangs that were happening so I'm really happy. Got away with it for just 3k aussie too... Still got a little play in the vertical movement of the steering wheel that needs to be looked at but the drive is certainly much nicer now.
