HELP! New to 944, help identify engine noise

Hi there,

We bought a project 944 track car that has issues and need to try to figure out what is wrong. have never wrenched on a 944 engine, so don't know what I'm dealing with.

Here is the noise via youtube video. Would love to get some clues and advice as to what is going on. Sounds like somethign weird with the timing belt or counterbalancers to me, but I'm a total newb with these engines.

Thank you in advance for any help you can lend.

Hello There:

First and foremost, "Welcome to Porsche ownership and Pelican forums!"

What this sounds like to me is:

Your balance shaft belt is too tight.

Are you using the P9201 Porsche Factory special tool to check the tension of the belts? This, P9201, is the best tool to use.

However, with that said...there are some that will tell you differently.

In all my years of working on these cars, I have never had a problem with the Porsche factory tools.

But, back to your issue. Put the car at TDC, lock the flywheel and start the 50k timing belt maintenance process again. When you get to the Balance shaft belt, you will have to also have a shim to ensure that the clearance is set properly.

If you do NOT have the Porsche Factory manuals, check into the website for
Clarks Garage. Lots of good information there.

Good luck and "have fun" with your Porsche.

Thank you Ed! At this point we are not doing anything. It was an as-is purchase and we took a risk with it.

Compression on the engine was 180-175-175-175 so we felt pretty comfortable the internals were ok. It started and ran decently hut intitially smoked quite a bit.

So you think it is the timing belt? Could it be anything catastophic? A little hesitant to jump in mechanically at this point!

check your youtube video, I updated it there with info. As Ed has mentioned, clarks garage website will do you well to fix any 944 issue. Pretty much step by step instructions for all 944 repairs.

Hello again:

You're very welcome!

No, I do NOT think that the timing belt is the issue here and should be fine.

What is causing the noise is your Balance shaft belt is too tight and needs to be re-tensioned again.

If you could loosen the Balance Shaft belt a bit, I am positive the problem will go away.

Your compression numbers are good, so no problem there!

Hope this helps.

Couldn't see or hear the video. In my opinion, the balance belt should whine a tad. I have had problems with my car when the balance belt does not whine, but was lucky that it did not take out the timing belt. Lost all but 9 teeth on one side, was recently tensioned by a porsche tech with the 9201. I observed the tensioning. Haven't used a 9201 since, no issues either.
