Replacing the CAT with a muffler?

Has any one done this in a non car inspection State?

Some one wrote me , but cant remember which type of muffler it was. I would like it to sound more like a Fabspeed w/o the expense (:

The car in question is an 89 S2 stock. with 97k

Any ideas ?

I have Borla cat back on my now for sale 08 Jetta(GLI clone) it does sound

OK why did it not STINK when I did it to my old 84 911?

so what would you recommend ? what really works ? a cat back ? which one if so?

Most Euro spec 944’s weren’t fitted with a cat and had a small intermediate muffler in its place according to pet.

maybe your nose isn't as sensitive...
i had a dead cat for some time and it REEKED...smelled like it was running rich all the time, but slightly different smell...CO poisoning for days.

it was a happy day to put a fresh cat back on.

If you've done it on other cars why are you asking again? exhaust options for 944/T/S/S2 is something that has been discussed ad nauseam on this forum and others. Do a bit of research and you'll find an endless supply of opinions and feedback.

Thanks , but each car is a little dif. 3.2 oil kooled and 3.0 H2o kooled thats why I was trying to educate my self. not to make a mistake. Will do further research

Installed this cat last year with a borla, works great. The cat is a 3" for higher flow, just need reducers to go up a size and then back down. Same one that lindsey racing sells for a fraction of the cost.

Factory cat equipped (same as factory decat) - 196.5 BHP @ 6500rpm & 184.2 ft-lbs of torque
Cat delete bypass tube - 197.7 BHP @ 6500rpm & 180.1 ft-lbs of torque
Cat delete custom resonator - 199.9 BHP @ 5500rpm & 199.2 ft-lbs of torque

The interesting thing is the differences in performance.

Cat delete bypass tube - +1.7bhp -4 ft-lbs of torque (yes MINUS 4 ft-lbs of torque!)
Cat delete custom resonator - +3.9bhp +15ft-lbs of torque

I found this on a previous post on 944 site. which had an explanation why this occurs.

In synopsis look at the results, has any one made a hook up like this replaced the CAT with a resonator? Like to hear what to have to say ,

I punched the cats in both my cars and it never affected passing emissions.

What it did do was make the sound deeper and throatier - which I like.

There is no effect to the smell.

Surprising, having a dead cat made my car undriveable for more than a few minutes at a time. Smell sticks to your clothes.

So much better with a brand new cat now.

As to those dyno numbers, guessing that's a 968 or 951 numbers?

S2 as far as I know from the post which I took it from, They were discussing S2 motors.

This is my stock front muffler. Ptno is 944 111 985 00 for an 8v like mine, 944 111 985 02 for the S2.

So this front muffler fits in the same space that the CAT was in ? Looks like a perfect replacement. Wonder how it sounds??

That’s the stock factory muffler fitted on some row cars that I mentioned a dozen posts ago. Yes it fits exactly in place of the cat but really doesn’t change the sound to any extent.

NZ would be a ROW car which did not have a catalytic converter from the factory. It has a pre muffler which is what he is showing you and giving you part numbers for.
