Engine Parts ID'd

1987 928 S4 auto

Hello,
1st of probably many questions. What are #1 & #2?
I've looked at many pics of 928 engines and haven't seen #1 on any of them. Looks like something should plug into it as it contains male pins.

#2 has an exact duplicate on the other side of the engine. They're held in place by a bolt that goes into the bottom of the air cleaner body.

Just wondering what they are.

I bought a non-running car and hope to bring it back to running condition. Was looking at the fuel lines and was distracted by these 2 items. Thanks.

#1 is a non-used test port. Just leave it there but if you like you can find a small round plastic insert to go in the end to cover the pins. It originally had a plastic cover, but I've only ever seen one car that still had one.

#2 is or should be 1 of 2 ports directly to the exhaust that were originally used IIRC to test CO. Not used currently, but if one or both are broken, they can removed and the hole sealed on the exhaust with a ball bearing and a cap nut.

Thanks John!

The caps on #2 (both sides) appear to be in good shape, so they're probably doing their job.

Working on getting gas lines replaced and hopefully started / running.
