1979 928 V8 automatic
New to the 928, had a 1970 911 Targa for years but off it went and I'm looking at getting back into vintage Porsche again.
I'm looking at a very original 1979 V8 automatic. The seller has advised there is a fuel pressure issue, the engine turns over and fires with starter fluid but not on it's own. Any ideas what this might be and if its a sign of bigger issues? Any general advice about the fuel pressure would be appreciated, and experiences with the 928. Good and not so good! Thanks |
Well, if it's a fuel pressure issue, check out the fuel system ! Pump, filter, etc.

It could be as simple as a fuel pump relay gone bad (always do the cheap easy stuff first) or a fuel pressure regulator gone bad. The FPR has a diaphram in it, which over time wears out. Not a hard job for a DIY, but getting the correct part is critical. If the car starts, that's a good sign.
I do recommend jumping to the Rennlist 928 forum and reading the FAQ sticky thread at the top of the forum all the way through, before you buy the 928. It will answer all of your initial questions and tell you what to look out for. Good luck, these are great cars. |
