1979 928 headlights
I've been searching threads for fixing my headlights that neither turn on nor pop up. My question is about the white hydraulic tube that enters the back of the headlight cluster which on my car has snapped. Is this tube anything to do with how the headlights pop up and down, or is for the headlight beam adjust? I'll be testing the relays etc, just wondering about this tube.

not sure on 79 but on other years the headlights are operated electrically through a motor right near the lights - motor is about the size of a soup can - should be covered with a rubber case to keep water out - if you remove the rubber and turn the knob on top lights will slowly go up - be careful as sometimes once it starts moving something connects and motor operates - don't want your hands in the mechanism - i would start by seeing if that motor is getting power with switch on - fuse? bad connection? - i know the 79's had some vacum operated stuff (door locks) - maybe the headlights too? - if so hook up the tube that's broken and see if that does anything - good luck

The tube is probably for the hydraulic headlight adjustment which is a different system than the one that raises and turns on the headlights.
If you have any acquaintances that have an older 928, remove your headlight relay and test it in their car (ie remove the currently working headight relay from their car and install your headlight relay in their car.) Do the headlights raise and illuminate with your relay in their car? If their headlights do not function with your headlight relay installed, replace the headlight relay in your car.

I have an 1984 and it was a relay that kept my lights from coming up and turning on.

I'm looking underneath the fender at the mechanism for the headlights. I've disconnected the motor arms so I can move the bar by hand to see what's happening with the mechanism. There's the part with a small roller on it that looks like it should push up the headlights up when the bar/motor turns. The bar only travels a very small amount because the part with the roller on it hits a protruding piece of bodywork. To me, it looks like the piece with the roller on it should rest on the protruding piece of bodywork when the headlights go down. Does this make any sense??!!
This doesn't have anything to do with the electrics etc but can anyone tell me if the mechanism is set up right. Thanks |
