I want to know where to start
i have a 1985 928s. i have looked everywhere for performance mods. i dont really want to go to the extreme of supercharging or powerstroking. i am looking for a performance chip that really works, an intke system to inprove flow besides just a k&n filter, and i have a sport muffler but i didnt know if there was anything else you can do to the exhuast. and if anything else please let me know.
also, where can i get a new dash. mine is cracked. thanks guys |

Lose the K&N filter
One more notch in the belt for K&N. Don't think for one second that you can make a trip to Pep Boys, spend $57 and get "any" horsepower from that fancy foam "race-car-filter".
Dyno tests show zero "0" increase in power, because Porsche oversized the filter box anyway, etc. This link kind of covers it all, check it out. Me, well I'm the guy who is going to burn both of my K&N filters, because I believe I'm a victim of false advertizing. I'll post the photos. http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=68225&f=48&h=0 Probably headers would be a measurable step, and the powerchip is "suspect" at this time. Freeing up the exhaust path is tried and true. Here's a source, but there are actually quite a few http://www.devek.net/ The main problem is this: The 928 (and the 944 series) are all "hot rodded" from the factory. They can be tweaked of course, but it takes money, and lots of it. There's a guy racing a 944 with 600-horsepower, but that motor has been taken apart, lovingly polished, parts upgraded in EVERY category, and specially fueled, cammed, and blown. The 928 can't easily be upgraded like a generic American V8. It's already upgraded. They are beautiful free revving motors, superbly balanced, and able to pull into high rpm. I have a 5-speed, and took my brother in law for a ride a while back just to show him what it would do. We ran it up to 100-mph, which is a piece of cake for a 928. We then shifted down to 4-th gear and ran up to 120, silky smooth, steady as a rock. We could have gone another 10-mph in 4th but not necessary ![]() Forget running Mustangs at stop lights, the 928 was never designed for that. It has one of the best high speed suspensions ever built. Enjoy. regareds, P

can you be more specific on what headers would work best for a 1985 928s and about how much it will cost.
i see all these exhuast systems for s4's. what will work for me and give me the best hp gain. and what about powerchips? |

I've got a cat bypass and FVD performance chips in my '85.
I've got a lot more giddy-up-and-go, but I haven't had it dynoe'd. The car bypass cost $350 including shipping, but I got the chips used, so I don't know the new price. The maker of the bypass dyno'ed cars with it and reported a 20hp increase. FVD claims a 30hp increase for the chips. Installation of both the chips and and the bypass were pretty easy (but the bolts on the exhaust system were corroded..yours might not be). |

The chips are kind of suspect these days with the informed 928 enthusiasts. The exhaust system, however, is a known way to get more power and there are few if any who will argue this point. Here are a couple of links you may enjoy.

What's wrong with your spoiler? They are expensive and a pain in the rear to replace...perhaps you can fix yours. Chances are you'll damage the new one soon if your car is too low to the ground.
Good luck on finding a new dash....$$$$$ Check eBay....there are sometimes used dashes in good shape. The other option is a dash cap. |

Hey Iggy, by the way, very nice web site, and I love the intake on that car. Didn't they only do that for only one year, 1985?? Naturally, I like the rest of the car too :-)
Regards, P

The intake was standard on 85 and 86 model years. Thanks for the compliment! |

I've noticed a lot of cat test-pipes Is there no free-flowing cat that works? Does everyone simply put the car back on every 2 years (or whenever) for testing?
Also, wouldn't hotter plugs, wires, iginition coil combined with a bored out throttle-body help at least a little? Emanuel

Emanuel:
There's no testing in Michigan. The test pipes were easier (and cheaper) to install than finding high-flow cats and having someone weld them onto suitable pipes. Hotter plugs, etc., might help a bit, but the catalytic converter is really a bottleneck on the system, especially for those that have become clogged over the years. With or without the other mods, the cats do need to be examined. P.S. Nology wires and the other stuff you mentioned can get pretty expensive, and may not provide enough added HP to justify the cost. |

Thanks for the insight. I thought of the plugs and wires because they seem popular with the 944 set, and everyone claims that engine is "just half the 928." Then again, it doesn't appear you get very much for them with them with the 4-cylinder either...

I've read that taking of the airpump belt make a difference, how much I would not know.
