Synthetic oil?

Come up here before? I didn't search...

But I was curious as I have switched all my other motorcycles and cars over to either Redline or Mobil 1 synthetics.

So, do you think switching my 78 928 with 130,000 miles to Mobil 1 15w50 synthetic is asking for trouble? And what about the gearbox, if I put in Mobil 1 75w90 synthetic gear lube?

Just would like some opinions please..

oils

The synthetic may weep a bit, but it is better protection. Maybe not worth the money in the earlier cars. I really like Durablend by Valvoline as a cost effective alternative.

Good luck

the older car with higher milage can benefit just as much or more from superior lubrication

looking at all the test data, the synthetic provides about as close to a "no wear" situation as you can find. I like the way my '83 runs with Mobil-1 or Amsoil, can't really see the difference on the gauge, but the 15w50 or 20w50 both will keep the gauge in the good zone when the motor is hot and at idle. Add the superior cold flow, and it's a no brainer.

Next time you're under your car "gently" snug the bolts on the oil pan as I suspect they are all loose by now. There are "not" to be over tightened, just snug them up reasonably tight and this is one of the better ways to keep the oil off the driveway. Your oil pressure sensor may go out, as mine did, and I thought I had a mechanical problem as the light on the dash started coming on but the gauge looked good. Come to find out, the '83 oil sending unit has two circuits, and one of them had failed. I replaced the sensor and everything worked great. I don't think that was a result of using synthetic oil. I like the fact that those iron coated aluminum pistons are sliding up and down inside those highly abrasive silicon lined cylinder walls with the film strength of a synthetic oil, and the bearings also have superior protection too.

As for the transaxle, I strongly recommend Amsoil Series 2000 75W90 synthetic gear lube. I used it in my '84 944 with 160,000 miles and it quieted it down and made it a lot easier to shift when cold. The Amsoil is rated higher than the Mobil gear lube, as Mobil won't meet the GL rating and AMsoil runs all over it.

You can get the Amsoil stuff from their web site, they'll drop ship to you or your place of business, no big deal.

I use these products in all my cars and I also use the Mobil 1 in a pair of 1966 marine 427 Fords, with good results.
