I bought one!

I just bought my first 928!

It's a silver 1985 928S Auto with 143,000 miles. All the intake rubber has been done, all the belts, water pump, anything rubber under the hood has been done. Motor mounts, AC is ICE COLD. Fresh tires. S4 7&8 inch rims.

The car is in really good mechanical shape, everything has been done.

I'll post some more photos soon.

Britt

Congrats on the purchase! It looks clean and well kept from the picture, and sounds like the PO was up on the proper service. Miles of fun ahead.

Man I love that motor photo. You know how rare that intake manifold is? It was only used a short while, and I think it's one of the coolest looking rigs ever, ha ha, really cool.

I'd like to use a few of your photos to document the 85, so please post a couple on the wasserpumper site noted below, and I'll use em as a feature. Thanks, lemme know if I can assist with your cool ride that looks identical to mine, by the way.

Regards, P

Anything you want in particular? I can shoot anything...

mine's an auto with black interior. service book doesn't list any options...

i'll post some question threads next week when i've got time... first problem is the interior lights, but I haven't even done the a fuse check yet...

I'm curious about the intake too, it looks like it's been polished or powder coated. Usually they are all flakey and rough looking.

85-86 intakes are specific to that year, yours appears to be painted or powder coated, probably Testors markers were used for the lettering (common)
nice looking ride there Britt, drop me a line and I'll set you up with the RDU shark group, we currently have over 50 sharks in this area!!!

Your car looks like my 83 "S".

This view, by the way, strikes TERROR into the Corvette and Mustang drivers of the world, when seen through a rear view mirror. Most of them don't have a clue what it is, haa ha.

not to get into it but I have heard that 928's have some ballz, how do they stack up to a 911 with a 2.7 or 3.0 or a 3.3?

I am slowly following in love with 928's - I have a 77 ROW 911 so compared to that, the reliability question is really not a question...

Firstly, to answer the question in the last post, "the more you learn about the 928, the more you will respect it's superior handling and great motor". Start searching 928 racing videos, and you'll see what I mean!

Now, back to that 1985 intake manifold !!!!!!!!!!

How come if I look around, I find other 1985 cars with different old style intakes? When in 1985 did they transition? I'm suspecting it's one of those mid year change-overs, in which case, this intake is one very rare event. I don't see this intake on any European car either, so I would like an update if possible on this, just for the sake of knowing.

Regards, P

one last picture...

I don't know much about the 928s, but I'll ask some folks about the 85/86 intake...

As for 928 vs 911, I can only compare my 2.2L 911 to the 928...

Around VIR they're both a ton of fun, the 911 is more responsive due to it's MFI and 5 spd transmission, which combined with it's more "entertaining" handling characteristics makes it a very demanding, but fun car to drive fast.

The 928's massive power advantage makes it fun to drive as well. I was surprised how well it handled, very very neutral, flat, and fast.

I can only imagine how much fun a 5spd 928 would be.

From a non-track stand point I find my 911 is much easier to drive when it's cold, the 928 needs some work in this catagory as it putters and spurts and smokes and doesn't want to go when cold.

The 911 just goes.

anyhow... i could ramble on about the differences for a while still...

Boy, the 928 looks small in that track picture. I guess it's a perspective thing along with the 928's narrow face. I know that the 928 is right at 6' wide, I didn't think the 'stangs were quite that big.

That was shot from some distance and then cropped...

You'd get some compression from the telephoto lens...

The 928 leans a heck of a lot less than the 911 at this turn....

Perspective... that pic makes the 928 look same size or larger than the 'stangs. BTW, how did you feel the 928 stacked up against those cars and any others at the track?

Well we were running pace car laps, and no passing, so I couldn't push the car as hard as I would at a real DE with an instructor and helmet.

I was following some friends in an M3 convertible, and an M roadster (z3+M) and they tended to pull away from me on the straights, but I wasn't usually using the kick down feature on the auto tranny to blast out onto the straights, when i did i was all over them. Usually the BWMs pulled away, and the stangs were on my bumper.

But at the end of the straights, especially going into the climbing esses at VIR i was all over everyone else, but half of that is the 928 rules, and i know those turns very well, and other people slowing down for various reasons...

I would say until you get to full on Track Day driving the 928 will hang with anything out there, now when you really go all out, I don't know...

oh yeah, the 928 will smoke my 911, but it's not really a fair fight...

Here is a link to Sniper's tried and true performance tweaks for the 928. There's more power available to the backyard tuner in the event you want it.

As for the 5-speed 928, I find it to be a real beast, not unlike the musclecars of the 1960's, but with far far better handling than any of them ever dreamed about.

Regards, P
