928 4v ignition wires fireflies under my hood!
hey guys. my 1986 928 is looking great. I spent most of the winter and early spring doing the 60k maintenance and some other projects on the car. anyway, occasionally the engine sputters, so the other night i turned out all the lights and ran the car in the garage and looked under the hood. just as i suspected i have fireflies under my hood. I guess too much voltage for 20 yr old wires. I intend to buy the Beru wire set that comes with wire looms. has anyone replaced the wires on a 85 or 86 32V engine? do i need to remove the plenums on my intake manifold? at first glance it looks like i might have to remove them because the wires are sandwiched between the plenum and the valve cover. if i do need to remove the plenums, what do i need for parts if any? If i am careful will they come off and go back on without replacing all the rubber?
also has anyone replaced their headlamps with 8" european assemblies? If so, I know they are expensive, but what do i need to order for a complete install and how much will this cost for the set. I don't care if they are dot legal or not. My friend has a 1980 euro model and it looks much better with lights filling up the area on the bonnet instead of that silly chrome ring. any experience as to what bulb i should put in the 8" H4 Assemblies to avoid a ticket? 80w low beam/ 100w high beam is what i want to run or should i just get the 55w/60w |

You shouldn't need to pull intake parts to change wires/plugs, but it may be a bit of an adventure to get them all layed back in there right.
As far as headlamps, I run the 7" Hella Euro-spec H4s with the standard bulbs (55/60??) and the light just fine and are a marked improvement over the DOT 7"ers. With the 8" H4, I think you'll find them to be excellent with the standard bulbs; both output and light pattern wise plus you won't need to worry about the extra load on the stock wiring of the higher wattage bulbs. You can also use the H5 units off the S4 cars by changing the plug, but unless you are shopping used (more common) the H4 is the better way to go IMO. |

i finally got my ignition wires. to install these wire on a 86 928 32v, the intake manifold plenums absolutely have to come off. the spark plug wire looms are bolted down to a rail that runs along by the fuel injectors. this turned out to be a non- event. they came off easily, and tall the rubber parts were in great shape. I had change my spark plugs several months ago, and i did it without removing the intake plenums. if i had to change the spark plugs again, i would remove the plenums without hesitation to make the job way easier.

BEWARE of brittle vac lines, some of them may be so cooked they'll break when you touch them. Break em and something won't work, like the heater flaps or worse.
BEWARE that a 928 ignition system is so hot it can potentially kill you, as stated in the owners manual. This is not the system to check by hand looking for a spark! Don't use aftermarket "non Porsche" wires, stick to the Beru replacement, or other Porsche-specific wire. Regards, P

Mark R.
Been awhile since I posted over here ......
I recently bought a set of "aftermarket" Beru wires from Mark Robinson, from Rennlist - all you need is your Stock OEM boots (They twist off) and your good to go. Less than 100.00 w/shipping. Almost as good as OEM but definately worthwhile. www.rennlist.com (search Mark robinson for contact info.)
