Need some 928 buying tips.

I found a '78 or '79 928 5-speed, for $2000, it has been sitting for 4-5 years, but was driven to where it is sitting, any tips, or things to look for? Is it worth the money

where are you located in ky? I am in richmond/lexington area. Is it worth 2000? I don't know. does it run/drive? Is the interior as nasty as the outside? If the interior is nasty, strip it down to save weight and make your car fast like m21sniper's car.

here is a link that should help

supposed to run? Bring a battery and some starting fluid. Also check all accessible fluids before driving( oil, brake fluid, ps fluid, coolant. see if you can start it. If you can drive it you can tell alot more. engine condition. trans (synchros known for problems) torque tube.

see if winddows go up and down, headlamps, lights, turn signals. check power locks and see if the heater works.

You can try the AC but I doubt it will work after 5 years. AC is pretty nice in ky come summertime!!!

Are you a very good mechanic? Do you have a garage?

I have been working on BMW's for 10 years, but no I dont have a garage, I dont know much about Porsches, I had a 911E which was a nightmare, I want another but something a little newer and more practical, I know this is a V8 and probably wont be efficient, thats why I am here, asking questions, assuming it does run, what can a person expect to pay for a 928 in the shape? Whats it worth based on what I have said, I kow isnt much.

appears to be sunroof and rubstrip delete which is always nice
if you want a decent project I have a 85US AT for $3k, pretty complete car and interior is servicable, was a daily until a yr ago

Sorry, $2000 is about all I can afford, one of the biggest reasons I was interested in this one is its less than 5 miles from my house. If it will run I dont care about the looks like. I was just concerned with getting stuck with junk, like I say, I had a 911e, I regreted buying!! it to had been sitting, but longer than I told. The rings were stuck, it smoked.. I was lucky to get out from under it. So my question is still assuming it does run and runs well, based on the pic of the body and just figure the interior is as bad... is it worth $2000?

Making the assumption ( which could be assuming ALOT ) that the car runs very well, looking at it, i'd say i'd buy it for $2000 if it was 5 miles from me. Its a Euro, which in my opinion, is worth slightly more than its US counterpart. Even at 219HP or whatever it is, it still is a quite fast little car. Where can a person get a comparable car for $2000? Its a 928 Porsche! Get that rascal going and restore it. Then race our very own Magnum or Sniper - and prepare to have both doors blown off. Just kidding.

Well I am gonna go look at it again, see If I can get it started. That spot on the hood, is from the tire. Are these cars 5-speeds...? or 4 speed? I do know it is a manual .. As far as racing, I will save thhat for a Need for Speed CD in my laptop....but thanks anyway

I would say that if $2000 is all you can afford, and 3000 is over your budget, then the 928 is not the car for you. 928 parts are expensive, and this car needs alot. you should figure maintaining a 928 that is already in good condition could cost 2000 per year.

that being said, if it will run you could drive it till it dies then get more than 2000 for parting it out.

And you may be right, thats what happened with my 911e, I had a few nice BMWs and never had probems with them, Why are Porsches so overly priced to maintain?.. Are there any Porsches that are less expensive?, and not a 924....please.

See if you can get it to start and run.

If it runs, well....where else are you going to buy a world class sports car for $2000?

Euros have more HP than the US models, and 5 speeds are generally very desirable. You could always part it out too. The car is probably worth over $5000 in parts!

As much as I PREFER Euro's:

Pass on this one.

I paid 4 G's for mine, drove it home to Texas, (put a set of tires on it, front brake pads---to make it reliable every day transportation), and haven't looked back since.

THERE ARE MUCH BETTER BUYS OUT THERE.....

Don't believe it? Ebay has 20 to 30 cars every day, starting out at $1000 going to the mid 50's. Take your pick.

And yes, most of them are drive-able, not a basket case like this.....this is a parts car in its present condition.

Save your money, buy one that you can drive home, has some maintenance records, and doesn't put a really huge dent in your wallet just to get the engine to run---much less drive.

regards---rhjames

Well I am on Ebay everyday, looking for BMW's and Porsches, Anything from 924 to 911.... 325i to 535's ... I cant find anything near my ballpark, unless its in pieces or been underwater. But for those of you who want an automatic fixer, theres one on autotrader.com for $1800. I think it had a bad transmission.

I watch eBay regularly, and yes there are decent cars out there for less than 5 G's.

What is always suggested is:

know how much you intend on spending at purchase, and the figure you'll dump another 10 G's getting it where you want it.

Or:

buy the newest model you can afford (credit: Wally Plumley).

Question is: how much can you afford to spend, both in purchase price and reconditioning costs? They go hand in hand with these cars, so don't be discouraged, just know where you're at.

If you really have the bug to acquire one of these, be realistic. These aren't a Honda Civic that some teenager bought for a grand and then dumped another 10 into just so he could impress his high school buddies with how much noise it makes.......

Good luck, and again, pass on this one.......

Regards--rhjames

Bad automatic tranny, but runs, too far for me, and an auto.
