Hello all,

I just purchased a 1980 928 last Saturday. It has 128K miles, the body is in pretty good shape, the engine turns over and works (there is smell of fuel when running) and the interior is in need of some help. This is my first experiment with a hobby car.

I've read the various threads on this discussion group and have already learned a lot. I loved the eating an elephant parody.

No real question yet, except maybe for the fuel smell, but there will be.

Regards,

David

Congratulations on your purchase. Give more on the particulars: color, interior, options, etc.

As for the fuel smell, don't start until you find the offending part or have a fire extinguisher. Where is the smell coming from? Engine bay, right rear fender, etc?

Congratulations, and +1 on don't run it with a fuel smell.

I had two mechanics look over my car and tell me my fuel injection hoses didn't look "good" but could wait a month or so to get fixed "while your in there". Since the hood was open I asked the second guy if he was REALLY sure they would be ok, and he reaches in and gives one a squeeze and the surface of the hose was instantly wet with gasoline, then he wasn't too sure.

Turned out the orings on the injectors were in no better shape than the factory hoses were.

If the fuel smell is out the tail pipe, thats just as serious as the catalytic converters can run dangerously hot.

There is also a hose related to the gas tank vent system that can make a gas smell.
