Soon will be looking for a 928
I am in the process of selling my V8, 914 running a 930 box. I will be entering the world of the 928. I will be looking for an S4 and have read a bit about the cars. I built my 914, engine, wiring etc and have no plains of farming out any jobs the shark needs (maybe a transmission but only after I fail a few times
![]() ![]() I love the look of the 928 but most of all the way its built. Its a real thing of beauty. What do you guys like best about the way the 928 drives???? |

914 and 928 are pretty much exactly the opposite type of Porsche. They could not be any more different... I know a couple who owns one of each.
The 914 is small, cramped, slow (with standard engine), and awesome for autocross (which is what they bought it for). THe 928 is more like a freight train, stable, comfortable, fast, roomy, safe - ideal for longer trips as well. My recommendation: Drive a few and then decide, if it's for you. |

Great deals are around on nice S4 AT's, but do what Nicole says, drive a few and get a taste for the variation.
If Ca is Calif, Sharktoberfest is coming up in Anaheim, that would be a great time to see a bunch of nice 928's. Despite doing all your own work, unless you just want a project, best to find a 928 that has no issues. BTW I live in Orange, feel free to stop by and work on one of mine for practice.

You gents are right, the 914 is small, cramped and has a poor ride on even the so so roads.
I have spent a ton of time on this car but don't like the everyday driving much in So. Ca. traffic. I am looking at a 15k budget and 3K to fix things when they happen. The important thing is for me to take my time looking, sometimes thats essayer said then done. I hope to find one that has no or small issues, no projects for me. I live in Orange County and the sharkfest sounds like a great place to go to get a look at some cars! I have a few little things to do on my 914 to get it just right and will then put it on the market. I think it will go quick with the right pricing.. ![]() |

My 928 2.0 road very nicely. Its not the trip car that the 928 is, but its not suffering either. Two trunks, my wife and I managed fine on many 1,000 mile trips. Did you have a stock suspension or something a bit stiffer?
$15k should get you a very nice S4. Do you want airbags? (90+ model years) Do you want digital dash? (89+ model years) My own preference is for about 80k miles, at least 5k recently. An example of NOT there is a GTS many are excited about, but it has less than 1000 miles on it in the last 7 years, so no telling what will show up once its really driven.

Remember I am running a 350 CID Chev small block with a 930 transmission. I have it set up as soft as I can given the power and weight. I have stock front T/O and sway, with 180 springs in the rear connected to Koni street adjustable on full soft along with needle bearing control arm bushings. I even went to 55 series sidewalls for extra road insulation, no 35s for me!!! I see your point needing a car thats been driven recently, the 928 is a complex machine compared to the starkness of a 914... ![]() ![]() Last edited by drive-ability; 09-12-2007 at 08:26 PM.. |

I suspect the engine has a lot to do with roughness, not just the added weight, but with the flat 4 it had that smooth feel a good running Porsche motor has.
OTOH I bet yours really scoots. ![]() ![]() The 928 S4 AT is MUCH more the cruiser, distance devouring machine, but its also very tame feeling around town below 60 mph. What do you think of the 914 Subaru conversions? I seen a few around, but have no idea what one might be really like, not that I am thinking in that direction, just curious.

Motor swaps get addictive.
I'm not sure I would want to be in anything faster than a tricked out 914, those handle insanely.

A supercharged S4 with an AT would be quite the ride.
What I like the best about how a 928 drives is the high speed stability and balanced and stable feel while cornering. I like bigger wheels and tires, uprated shocks and springs. 90 on the highway feels like 55. you arrive feeling fresh. I will say that I have always preferred the early comfort seats over the later seats. You do want a sorted 928. Easier to maintain than to bring up to snuff. AC should work, heat should turn off, all electrics should work, and the owner should know more about the service history than he does about the stereo he installed. Timing belt woes on a 32 valve car mean big bills no matter how much work you do yourself, so no service history means a new belt asap. Nice 928s often are not much more expensive than poor examples, so it pays to shop around. Of course they almost always buff out well, so some good looking 928s are really just shined up wonders. Rennlist has a really good 928 forum, and the stickies at the top of the page are well worth reading. Good luck with your search. |
