Any tips for removing 928 S4 seats?

I am going to be removing the front sport seats from my 928 S4 for some upholstery work. Is doing this straight-forward or are there some helpful tips I should be aware of?

pretty straight forward
move seat back, LOOSEN front bolts, move seat forward, LOOSEN all bolts and then remove
move seat back, remove front bolts
tilt seat back, disconnect wiring harness
remove seat
say, 10 minutes a side if nothing is stripped
if a bolt strips, take a dremel and cut a slot in it and use a long handle screwdriver

Geez, 10 minutes a side? Is that with hand tools and normal sized hands? Maybe I have always dealt with seats that lack full movement, but I would have said an hour overall would be good just because of the access issues.

hey Stan---

try S4 seats in my 80 Euro....they're great, recently back from being reuphostered in leather, but mounting them wasn't easy. The early seats go in differently (attaching bolts) so I have to do a little fabbing to get them in. It took about an hour each side.

you're right--time wise, if the seats don't move back and forth---I haven't come up with a wiring patch from S4 to early 928, so mine are just bolted in where they need to be. Dave Roberts supposedly has done the retro fit, but haven't contacted him as to the wiring issue (other things going besides seats...).

Otherwise, it's just routine, just as Rixter has said.

Suggest you replace the carpet (if need be) at the same time? What a difference THAT made....

I have only dealt with pre S4 seats so far. Eventually I will be pulling the seats from my GT to have redone, as one had a bolster repaired in vinyl (nicely done, but just dumb). Not sure if I will have them modified to sports eats, but since they are 12 way I will keep them and intend to add heat too. Plenty of other stuff to do first

note: I said 10 minutes a side, but IF none of the bolts are stripped
I use standard hand tools, and I have small hands which helps (actually helps a lot on most things 928)
as for wiring in S4 seats to early cars, if you have/had electric seats already, you need to swap the pigtail to the later ones, early pigtail IIRC is 8 pin, later is 14 pin
any dismantler should be able to get you later pigtails

Rixter---

my Euro pigtails only have two wires (in the plug---one hot, one ground) for both sides, although the car only had a power seat on the driver's side----- The S4 seats' plugs are totally different---the driver's side has an 8 pin, and the passenger has a 6 pin.

question is how to mate up the two different types of pigtails to make the electrics work.....

Suggestions?

you'll need the pigtail that goes into the main harness, not just the one on the seat itself

When you say pigtail, are we talking socket on each end, or socket on one end and cut wires on the other that you splice?

Rixter,

do you have the stuff I need to make this wiring conversion work?

if so, could you send me a PM and give me the details, costs, etc?

the seats (my newly recovered S4's) are just fantanstic and I sure would like for the electrics to work. (Makes it easier for the rugrat to get in and out of the back seat.....)

thanks---Russ

PS one of these days I'm going to send you some pics of the grey/green interior pieces I have that you said you might be interested in.....
