Alternator interchange

I have an '81 with the 90 amp Paris-Rhone Alternator..I've seen many more Bosch alternators available for much less $$ that list coverage for '81...are they interchangeable?

I am interested in alternator alternatives too. Something with more output. Anyone done a swap on a early series?

Carl Fausett has a large amp alternator on his website (928 Motorsports).

the price might send you into cardiac arrest, necessitating the high amp alternator anyway.......

Some people made a go of it with a certain model of Delco, D130, I think, but you need to resolve a few issues like mounting, wiring, cooling, and pullies. I don't think there is anything quite like a cookbook guide to doing it yet, but it also doesn't sound like more than a modest fabrication project.

I decided to put in an electric fan instead of the clutch drive, and I will be using an 84 Euro motor, so I imagine I will be reworking the pulleys entirely.

Alternators have improved by 3 generations since the 80's, so mostly everything is better about the new ones.

I'm not so much interested in boosting my amperage, I just wonder if the Bosch unit called out for the same model year is an exact fit.

I am suspicious is isnt because when you do a parts search is always asks if you have a "Bosch" or "Paris-Rhone". The Boschs seem much more available and therefore cheaper.

One of the receipts for my car is for $400 to replace owners alternator with the CORRECT model.

YMMV.

Talk to the guys at Eagle Auto Electric on ebay, they seem to know what they are doing and have fair prices.

The simple answer is yes.
They are interchangable, however you need to ensure the pulleys line up correctly just to be safe and that the air duct is in place.
Replacement Bosch is $160.
