So far I have ONE of these silly rubber plugs out semi intact, but they just don't want to come out. Am I missing some easy trick, or do I need to find or make some kind of plug puller? Or just tear them out with pliers and plan on put in new ones? I'm about at the end of my coax.

Only the 78-79 cam tower used the rubber plugs the later style are screw in metal plugs...the rubber plugs get cooked to such an extent that they are one time use.
