When Two Parts aren't the same~

I just received a shipment from 928 International.

I ordered a horizontal grill piece, a couple of oil filters [when I lived in Orlando, I could buy these in Pep-Boys. For the same price: Hello?] and a nylon part to make my hatch work again.

The reason I post this: Porsche is an interesting company. They change suppliers and parts without changing part numbers! That's not very German is it !

Well, here's what happened. I'm in the process of replacing the grill on the front of my 928. The grill parts horizontal and vertical have literally crumbled into plastic dust, and the remaining parts have been mangled a few times. I bought two new OEM horizontals for my grill a few months ago, along with the required and more important horizontals.

I needed a part to make my rear latch work, and 928 Intl. com has it Since I was paying to move parts, I took advantage and and bought oil filters along with the parts that I need.

But here's the thing: The part they sent me? It is made of aluminun, is obviously a Porsche part, and if it was installed on my car, I probably would have given it more value~

That aluminum grill is totally hot! I didn't know Stuttgart did it?

I can relate to your frustrations with buying 928 parts. I learned not to depend on my local authorized Porsche dealer for 928 parts when I ordered parts and six weeks went by before I got some of the parts and was told the others were no longer available

I like 928 International for used parts, odd items, and hard-to-find items. I like Pelican for new parts. For filters and basic maintenance items I like ********.com as their prices are great.

The thing is, the pictures that I took last night would show you nothing. The parts are EXACTLY the same, even the part numbers. But the horizontal grills I bought from 928 Specialists are plastic, and the 928 that arrived from International...is aluminum!

You can't fault 928 Specialists or 928 International. They sent what they were ordered. My point is that it is amazing that Porsche changes parts this much! Same part number, but one is aluminum and one is plastic...

Grills aren't important. But engine bearings, clutches, timing belts and other important parts? They ARE.

The Nichols' site [bowing down repeatedly] shows how to work on our cars. Rennlist does too. Wayne has about 450 beers in my fridge waiting for him, since he set up this site!

My point: Have you ever bought a Porsche part, and found that it there was significant production line variation?

Many parts are succeeded by new parts.

Did you buy new or used parts from each vendor?

My guess is if you request either type part, most 928 vendors will get you what you need, or tell you if they don't have it.
