Clacking in my Dash.

Hello All,

I am new to the Porsche world and very green at mechanics, so my future questions may seem fundamental to Y'all!

There is a clacking noise coming from behind the center vent in my 1990 S4 dash. It occurs while the heat/AC is both on and off. It begins when I step on the accelerator and either continues for quite a while or most often quits when I take my foot off the gas pedal. It does occur each time I drive and it is more pronounced with the heater/AC on. Any idea on what needs to be fixed / replaced? Thanks! John

John how much of the work on your 928 would you like to be doing yourself?

If its more than pretty minor stuff that could be explained here in the forum, you will need a set of the 9 volume workshop repair manuals. Printed copies show up from time to time, and a fellow 928 owner also has a scanned and indexed set on CD. On a typical job most of what you will do will come from a guide or other online writeup, but diagrams, torque settings, all that kind of stuff is in the WSM, and many times even with a guide its good to see what the "porsche" way of doing it is.

A great way to get started doing work on your 928 is to attend the regional group meetings and informal work on your car parties. Visit another owner and be an extra set of hands, and you get to see just how some jobs are done.

Email Jim Morehouse for info a CD set of the WSM.

Clacking dash -II

DanglerB -thanks. I'm currently trying to acquire the manuals. I would like to do the work myself to learn the car. Are the regional group meeting schedules posted online? Is that the PCA group or the 928 Forum here in PP? Thanks for your help, John

We have a great 928 group in NVA, MD and DC.

Where are you located?

Glenn

Hey Glenn,

I am in Lakeridge (Woodbridge, VA), and work in DC at Bolling AFB. let me know when the next get-together is. I once saw a gold 928 (early model) heading north on I-95 during my morning commute, any idea who he is? Cheers, John

I agree 100%. This is almost certainly some kind of leak - but there are a few different areas where it might occur. You need to get a MightyVac to test the vacuum and narrow down the area, before you start taking things apart.

In addition, if it's the center vent vacuum actuator, those are tricky to replace in general, and even trickier on the airbag cars. I've done mine - the console has to come-out, and you will have to drill a hole into the heater box in the right spot to get the actuator arm on again.

Here is my write-up:
