G50 - Bizarre behavior on 1st
This G50 has been working great in my '80 car........except that it hesitates to go into first gear. I've taken the regular route and adjusted, readjusted the rods and angles and all bushings are fresh at the shifter. I'm told that nothing should hang up first gear. It's a parts yard G50 - and problem happens on uphill areas - - not on a downgrade...
That suggests to me that something is moving or sliding in the g.box and a part (synchro) is out of tolerance or something. There is NO grinding into first....it just has to be 'forced' into the gate with excessive shifter strength. All other gears work real nice. Before the install, I looked in the box and the reverse lockout spring took me a few minutes to reposition, while realizing the bolt on the side relieves the pressure. ..Could the reverse lockout mechanism 'inhibit' engagement to first ? The gearbox came from a fire car - with under 60K on it. G50's are known for their strength. And Reverse works fine... One more ....the alum knuckle at the front that attaches up to the shifter rod had some slop in that area. Is that a critical part or can it move freely in it's travel ? ...thanks. Do you mean G28/05?
I have a 928 Motorsports precision shift ball thing waiting to go on mine, but slop doesn't sound good. Whats it like going into reverse? Is it always hard to put into 1st, like stopped engine off, stopped engine on, moving slowly like 10 mph or less? |

G28/05.......it is.
Engine Off - goes into 1ST with some small (3-4 lbs) effort. Idling / or 10 MPH - goes into 1ST, but arm effort roughly 12 lbs or so. Reverse is always fine...never reluctant. Always 1ST.....on an upgrade hill position. Downhill grade - 1ST slips in with minimal effort. |

Maybe somebody will have a better idea, but I would start with this.

Danglerb, that's a 'trick' piece of hardware in your post...
As well as a bump in quality from the OEM part and a sure way to eliminate that part of the car from the diagnosis ongoing . Fwiw it seems strange for all my gears to work - but not 1ST - as a result of that cup but.........I look forward to trying it. __________________ '80 928 |

One of the reasons I suggest it is that I am told it is remotely possible to put it on without messing with the torque tube, and the factory plastic cup is much harder to install.
Are sure your clutch is fully disengaging? |

Actually, I am not sure it is fully disengaged. ...If you can roll the car with a
piece of wood holding in clutch pedal and gear level in 1ST...... that has been my test to this point. A more conclusive way perhaps ? _______________ '80 928 |

I edge toward thinking it is linkage or selector shaft issues since the other gears work well. I asked one of the local guys thats rebuilt a tranny and this is what he said.
"Either his clutch plates are not adjusted properly, and they are dragging at engine speed, not allowing smooth takeup of 1st, or there is some issue in the box like worn synchros (usually true anyway) or the selector shaft is hitting stuff it shouldn't." |
