SoCal 85 Euro AT on LA CL cheap
I talked to the owner a couple times, somebody needs to save me from buying #4, today. Ad says $2600 obo, and the bo so far is $2k and he wants it sold today.
Some kind of blue, says clear is going bad, but not repainted, but clear is what goes bad from a repaint. Sounds like it mostly works, except the usual sunroof, odo (showing 110k), cap on dash is bad. Back in 2002 it failed a smog test with nothing since until 2008 (passed). VIN is wp0zzz92zfs841029 Sitting here pondering how I might spin this for my wife.... Save me from myself. http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/car/592365255.html |

My wife prefers an automatic, and there are times I prefer one as well, but after about half an hour of sweating I decided to keep my focus on the cars I have. Expecting to get it for less than $2k I don't think would be productive, but cash often persuades.
For me the problem is that this is a $3500 car for $2000, and I can't afford anything less than about a $8,000 for $3500. ![]() |

Ah, now I get it! The WIFE prefers an Auto. Then there you go. You tell your wife that she would great in a Blue 928 and your in there! Like I said, if he really wants to sell today, which I guarantee he didn't, I would offer $1600 "1K less." Then let the negotiations begin. Seriously, you never know.

Wife prefers an auto, but can drive a stick, and liked our 951 5 spd more than the 81 928 auto we used to have. Having an auto trans car is therefore desirable, but having it be another 928 not that big of a plus. Better to have our auto trans Continental and a couple of 5 spd 928's.
I thought about flipping it, and I would rather just pass it on to somebody else. If I give the guy a call back tomorrow and his current best offer hasn't come through, then I might make an offer, or at least think about an offer enough to inspect the car. |

I've got errands in mind tomorrow that would have me about halfway to the car, so I might go look at it and change my mind, but as it sits now I am content to pass it on.

![]() ![]() Well, a blue Euro for 2k was just more than I could pass up. Been looking for a project car since I finished and sold the '86.5 a couple months ago. I just hope it's not more of a project than it is a car! Should be intersting to say the least. But worst case, I only got a couple thousand tied up in it, I probably could part it out and break about even. The up side though, fixed up it will be an awesome compliment to my GTS.

$2200 usd. Someone local may have gotten another $100 or so off the price but having to deal with me out of state, wiring the money, dealing with the shippers etc..... Bottom line I guess is, I'm happy with that, if the car is mechanically sound as the former owner claims. Hell I was considering it when he was asking 3500, then I was thinking if I could get it for 3k I might do it. I'm glad I hesitated.

Russell, THANK YOU
![]() Whats really funny about this, the first Euro I bid serious money on was in FL, and I live in SoCal. $3200 on a white Euro S a mechanic was selling, hindsight I wish I bid on his tool box which sold for $1500 including tools. The way I look at price on these cars is that I'm going to be putting thousands in, so I don't go for that last $100 or so even when I am sure I could get it. My reasoning is that I want to be on good terms with the former owner, so when they look around and find a box of manuals they go with the car instead of on ebay, or I get that last tip about true condition like X was fixed, but maybe you should look at it, that kinda thing. Dr Bob is right next to Arcadia I think, maybe you could talk him into a look? Good luck, pictures soon I hope etc. |

I'm on good terms with all three of the people I bought 928's from. That doesn't mean I don't think unkindly toward them at times.
![]() No point in faulting people for being human, and most of the time I am PO because I should have been smart enough to see X or Y before I bought the car or made the offer. This post reminds me I need to email one of the guys to see if I can help him get another of his 928's working, and follow up with a different guy I bought stuff from to see if he needs anything. The way I figure it, its almost impossible to get a good deal from a rotten person, and its easy to get a good deal from a good person. |

I haven't got the car yet, so I may be speaking out of turn here, but....The PO seems like a decent guy and has been good to deal with. I don't think he knows much about 928's, but there's no question that we are a unique bunch!
I'm sure I will spend several thousands quickly to get this car right. But it will be done my way and I'll enjoy doing it and the satisfaction on the final results. So the upside on this neglected old Euro is very high in my opinion. Hell, somebody had to buy it! ![]() Time to scoot the GTS over a little and make room in the garage for surgery. Now if I could only find a 3-car garage on craigslist........

My impression is that the PO is a 911 guy, picked up the 928 CHEAP non running, took it to a shop in the Pasadena area where they did $900 of work on the fuel system/pump/something and then tried to sell it for $4200 out of the shop to pay the bill. That didn't work and he eventually paid for the work and got it smogged and started trying to sell it for $3600.
He said no email, but did give a cell phone contact I think, but only advertised it in Craigslist AFAIK. Times I talked to him I did not get a run to the bank and buy it vibe, and once the price started to drop might as well see how far it goes. Below $3k seemed to wake a lot of people up, but then I got the impression some people looked at it and found problems, calling it a parts car. Now I suspect those were idle comments and its never been inspected. Upside could be very good. Downside could be very bad. BTW ad is up again on craigslist I just checked. Russell any thoughts on loading it up with parts before shipping? |
