Manifold back exhaust system going in my 85 Euro Thursday
My 85 ran under its own power today, a bit noisy with the exhaust open from the manifolds back. Two trys with adapters failed to give satisfaction in mating the old exhaust with the 86 US exhaust manifolds (2" or so offset on passenger side) as mounted on the 84 Euro S motor, so I decided to go ahead and flatbed it to a muffler shop and have a new system done from the manifolds back.
Subject always to last minute changes, this is what I have worked out with the muffler shop. 86 US manifolds. 2" input 3" output Y merge pipe using the Burns Stainless recipe. 3" in/out Magnaflow cat, 9000 series I think. 3" alumanized steel pipe to the rear. 3" in, dual 2" out magnaflow muffler, something 5x8 oval I think. "I think" because I wasn't paying enough attention on the cat, and muffler guy wants to see what the muffler looks like in person to check the fit. Rost Off rocks, used it to remove old hangers etc. and it worked great. Only reason I am not using a Lomas Y is that they don't make a version that fits these manifolds without an adapter. I haven't ruled out using the 928Intl cat back, but it would be extra work to have the custom cat front made to hook up. |

Hey Dangle, I think you'll find that the 3" cat with no mid-muffler will create a resonance exactly the frequency of your skull. Don't believe me? Check back with us in a week.

Cat is actually a Magnaflow 94109, 3" in/out.
Not looking forward to revision, but I figure a custom exhaust will have some tweaking. Hmmm, muffler guy was telling me one of the 94000 series cats actually has a resonance chamber as part of the design, but not the one he is using on my car as far as I know. Merge pipe they are actually using I haven't seen yet, so I don't know how close it is to the Burns Stainless (which they were using a 4x1 in a set of headers they were building saying its a $600 part). The BS has 2" inputs joined with 3" output, then an expansion cone either 4" or 5" depending on length, then necked back down to 3" out. ![]() |

Exhaust is on, I drive it back to the shop for more fiddling with other stuff tonight. I need to plug the sample tube port on the exhaust manifold, but otherwise a good first effort.

Oh, here is the sample tube port, size to be determined.

Is the bluing in the picture from welding?
My new cat has blued, but when I read the Eastern Cat literature it implies gasoline is entering the cats and burning hot inside (injector leakage). My guess is yours is welding.

Center hanger on my car at least was from the torque tube already, they took it off and moved it back about 6 or 8 inches, then switched bracket types to a "post" fitting instead of a tongue.
Above picts are immediately after welding, and before even a test drive, so yes, pretty sure the blue is welding. I suspect the A/F is way off, likely rich as that is how it was for Normy. Right now brains still have US chips, next step is to put in Euro map chips I have from John Speake. ********* So far all is looking good, car seems to shift well, no vibrations or funny business driving, all instruments working except oil is flashing and maxed. Flooring it produces a lot of smile factor over 3500 rpm. Lots of work still to go. |

not quite what I would have done, as I prefer dual systems, but that's a really nice job-----quite tasteful.
[I could complain about the CAT stuff (I know, you've got to have it for the CA smog cops), but there are CATs now that are plenty big enough to not restrict the air flow---even if you're racing one.] Looking good D, keep after it! ![]() --Russ |

Not much choice at least for now on the Cat, #94109 is straight out of the Magnaflow special CAL residents must use catalog as a universal replacement for the 928, so it "should" be 100% legal, and easily pass smog inspection. 49 state its rated as a OBDII compliant cat, so its likely very very clean, but should still flow better than stock.
I've got a SUPER itch to be driving it, and I am having a real hard time resisting buying stuff for it, but it does have a lot more little stuff that needs to be done before it gets smogged and comes home. After I drive the car more, and compare the exhaust to some other systems hard to say what changes I might want. Louder, at least for the street I don't think is an option, its pretty loud, but if I don't get any tickets its fine with me. |

One more little thing to pass along:
I too mounted a nice, lightweight muffler in place of the stock 'suitcase,' and promptly discovered why the suitcase has a heavy liner and shield on the left side. It's not for heat. Note how your left rear tread is now about six inches from the left edge of your new muffler. |

That looks pretty nice. Some of the bends could be more efficient but all in all, a very nice setup. Are you going to paint the exhaust so it doesn't rust?

That looks really nice and clean Mike! Is the solid hanger on the rear muffler normal?

![]() The round rod welded to the muffler has an S curve to it giving some spring, but seriously the second bit of rod goes up to some normal factory type thing. **************** Lot of revision 1.0 to this exhaust. I got confused on telling them the pipe size. The manifold ID is 2", so I said its 2", but in muffler talk I guess they use the OD, so I may have then redo the Y in 2.25". Or, depending on what I do with my 83 I might just swap the exhaust to it, not sure yet. All plans of course subject to the first go round with the smog check guy. I have the old muffler shield, and I am thinking about how it might be used, but the Magnaflows are lifetime stainless. |
