Checking Oil Pressure Sensor

Anyone know a relatively easy way to check the output of the oil pressure sensor? My oil pressure gauge pegs upon startup and stays there...I've rebuilt the instrument cluster so i know all the grounds, lines, etc are good...but i can't find any info in the shop manual about what readings to expect fromt the oil pressure sender. I figured I could go the main circuit board to check the values but don't know what readings to look for.

Thanks!

I have the same issue. Pegs at the top of the scale and stays there. Always has, and instrument cluster R&R fixed many things, just not that. Where does the sensor plug in on the engine?

i had assumed it was the sensor on the top of the oil pan, but need to double check. i was also excited after i rebuilt the cluster because someone in the past had removed many of the trouble lights..now everything OK except coolant temp and oil pressure

The sensor is on the bottom of the engine between the oil pan and oil filter right behind the alternator. There are two wires that come off it. From what I've heard and experienced when you replace it the whole assembly usually comes out. Simply remove the sensor part and reassemble being carful to make sure the springs are in the right direction.

I believe you can test it with a multimeter but I don't know what the range is suppose to be. I'm sure someone with more experience will chime in.

You might want to try cleaning it as it gets kind of mucky but because of location, cost of oil, and general pain in the neck I just chose to replace mine.

Best way to check it is testing vs a known good mechanical gauge.

If it shows pegged hot at an idle, and your not running Amzoil, then I would suspect its not working. Check the wires, and measure the voltage to make sure its not something simple before replacing.

thanks..it should be easy enough to check for shorts/opens. the gauge pegged from when i first bought the car, which wasn't a shocker with all the other electrical issues it had..but I'm slowly fixing all the other problems, so would be nice to know that i have oil pressure!

From the schematic i cant tell what's actualy going on inside the sender unit, and so the circuit geek inside me is bothered.

There are three connections...

The body (ground to the block) the low pressure switch and the pressure sensor. The last 2 are terminals..

If you swap the wires you will get a switch input to the dash input that expects a variable input (pressure gauge) and a variable input to the dash input that expects a switch to turn on the low pressure light. try swapping the connections - what do you get...

The Blue/White wire should go to the G (sensor) terminal & the Blue/Black wire should go to the Wk (switch) terminal.
