New 928 owner...

..and it's not me, LOL. I'm a 911 owner, and I also race in the SCCA. And serve on the Improved Touring Committee, which classes cars, among other things. A friend has purchased, for next to nothing, a 1980 928, and he'd like to race the car. Trouble is (well, the first trouble, at least, LOL) that the car isn't even classified to race in Improved Touring, his preferred venue. Of course, he's used to uphill battles, as he currently races a Triumph TR8 in ITS, and pretty successfully, too.

My role is to help figure out how to class it. In Improved Touring, (IT) there are 5 levels of classes, from ITC for old Datsun 510s and the like, to ITB, (Golfs, etc), ITA (Acura Integras, etc) ITS, (944s, 2nd gen Mazda RX-7s) and the latest class, ITR. (E30 M3s, E36 325s, 944S2s, 300ZX's, etc). The 928 will fit into ITR, but to class it at the right weight, we need to apply a process, and part of that process is determining the IT horsepower.

Essentially, the rules allow .5 increase in compression, free exhaust, port matching 1" in, free intake from the air sensor out, free ECu, balance and blueprint, and thats about it. Stock pistons or equivalent, stock cams. Typically, that means a 25% increase in crank power.

Can anyone here give me their opinion on what that engine will see in such a build? or can anyone point me to an "expert"?

Thanks! If we can get this classed right, we'll have another Porsche out there pounding around!

Starting from a 1980 US 928, the man to talk to is Jim Bailey at 928Intl.com. Others will have more info, but here are some links.
