Chasing drains
My 85 Euro is getting "close" to driver stage, but a couple times the battery has gone completely dead over just a few hours, as in start it, drive it out of the shop and park, and its dead that afternoon and won't start.
Today I disconnected the battery ground strap and put a big charger directly on the battery. About half an hour later once it had a bit of a charge I put my amp meter between the strap and the ground point and measured between .3 and .5 amp with the key off. After a few minutes the drain settled at 0.310 amp going as low as 0.270, which is about 10x what I would have liked to see. Starting from the left side of the CE panel I pulled each fuss, checked the drain, and replaced the fuss before pulling the next one. None of them changed the drain reading, but leaning on a window switch sure did. 0.300 amp even all day long should not be enough to kill the battery, but a window switch stuck on might, so I plan to replace both of them. Next step is what? I am thinking I should disconnect all the jump post connections and check those one at a time, and maybe do the same thing at the starter post and battery positive post. |

Hi Mike. Chasing a drain can be exhausting. If you cannot locate drain, you might want to try this. This is the battery brain. It shuts battery current flow if it drops below 11.8. I havent had to use it due to a drain, yet. Mine has the remote so I can shut down batt easily. It's also an anti theft device. Take care.

First disconnect the additional supplies at the battery positive - all but the big lead - any difference?
Disconnect everything at the jump post any difference ? Disconnect the alternator - any difference ? Alan

Hey big Z nice to see you here.
Alan, thats next on my list. I'll clean all the connections and grease them with Ox Gard at the same time I am testing. I'm going to make up a set of 18' long test leads so I can watch the meter from anyplace around the car. I'm thinking about 0.1 ohm current shunt as well since I don't like running amps through my good meter. |
