85 Euro passes Calif smog check
I printed out Porkens MAF adjusting guide, and decided to take a whack at using the logic mode of my meter instead of building the complex circuit. My MAF had the adjusting screw pointed at the firewall, so I started out by pulling the air filter box and messing with the MAF (cleaned the U, replaced the O rings, greased it up with silicone grease, and putting it back with the adjustment screw oriented conveniently).
I tried turning the MAF adjustment without the B/C jumper and nothing happens, A had a constant about 13v. With B/C shorted my meter showed about 14v, then as I turned the adjustment it started slowly dropping to 0V over maybe 15 seconds. Switch point was VERY narrow, and I ended up leaving it as close to the sweet spot as I could, and drove to the smog test station. Test only station, guy was very thorough, but somewhat confused, entering NA on some stuff I know I have and looking things up in some phone book sized reference, but not one word to me. Emission test results. 15 mph 1484 rpm 15.2% CO2 0.5% O2 MAX.....AVE...MEAS 120 41 33 HC ppm 0.76 0.13 0.06 CO% 1074 399 277 NO ppm 25 mph 1772 rpm 15.1% CO2 0.2% O2 MAX.....AVE...MEAS 95 29 28 HC ppm 0.56 0.11 0.03 CO% 904 332 891 NO ppm Low CO% nasty NO. |

I had a great desire to take some good pictures, with things like rulers showing size etc., but only time to take a few half bad picts, so I skipped it for now. Unfortunately this was a "while your in there" where I am 100% I am going back later.
Here is a Porken Blinker thread. http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/showthread.php?t=402745 My meter is this one. http://store.imarketcity.com/mspentyac602.html ![]() |

High NOx can be caused by advanced ignition timing. Since your 15 MPH reading is low the base timing is probably ok. So that means your distributor is advancing the timing too much (for a smog test, not necessarily for performance or economy). Does the euro distributor have a steeper curve then a U.S. dizzy?

Its all electronic, but yes the Euro timing is a bit more than 2 degrees more advanced than the US (both LH2.2, but US is 32v and Euro is 16v 10.4 compression).
With the car running, and any notion of it not being a keeper regardless of the insane cost of putting it 100% dissipating, its going to be a long haul of working through the whole car pretty much end to end. Bad EGR might also shoot the NO up I think, so I may look into that. |
