Just made a new purchase

I just purchased a set of 5.0 pistons that were cut for euro"S" heads. As soon as they arrive their off the the machine shop with a 4.7L block I have to fitted.

When they come back I'm going to install my euro "S" top end and the Alien gets a HP boost!

Am I stoked? Oh ya, I'm stoked!

So your going to have the 4.7L block bored from 97 to 100mm and lapped or whatever they do to prep the cylinder walls?

I still haven't decided on a hybrid or not for my next motor.

Yes, I just printed a stack of info on the proper method for boring the blocks for the machine shop. They probably know what their doing but I'm not taking any chances.

The only boring option I gave much consideration to was to bore a 5.0L to 5.4L and use 968 pistons, but so far it isn't a likely thing for me anyway.

So, does this mean you won't be bringing the Alien to SITM this year?

85-86 pistons. The price was good. Because I made this purchase, it's more likely I will get the car on the road this year. I don't have time to pull my 4.7L "S" , do a complete tear down, figure out what locked it up, fix it, and put it back in. This way I can concentrate on a new short block. Then When the engine comes out I can swap over all my new "S" parts.

I'm usually not working this time of year so I would have time to do stuff. But I have been called to assist in WI and may end up in the U.P. of MI. over the next month or so. Can't build stuff from a hotel room. I'm not complaining but as much as the money is welcome, I'd rather have the time.

No I'm sure the local guys have never done a 928 specific block. That's why I'm bringing them the boring info. I have a working relationship with them. I'm not afraid to ask them point blank if after reviewing the info if they feel confident enough to do the job.

If they are not equipt to complete the task I have a lead for a shop that is 180 miles away that has done a 928 block. So I'm proceeding with caution.

As I understand it the Nikasil allows pistons without the magic coating to work, but I haven't heard about factory piston coating wearing off.

I think Rich needs a cheap spare running motor so he can drive the car a bit between overhauls.

Actually, I'll be working in Milwaukee next week, but I doubt the pistons will be here in time. I'll need them so they can get the bores to the correct tollerence.

I may check into using them for the cylinder resize.

I was talking to Charles Navarro of LN Engineering. Google him. He also does Nickasil coating. Based on my conversation with him, as I understand the iron coating will damage the Nickasil lining, but allows the use of aluminum pistons. I'm not willing to spend $ 1000.00 to $1300.00on a block with two kids in college. So... The econo bore job will have to do.

I'm convinced the 928 was designed to be impossible to save money on.

I was hoping the pistons would be here for the weekend. But were supposed to get 2' of snow over night. When that happens the city usually doesn't clear my street for two days. I hate effin snow!

That is so sad I don't have the heart to talk about SoCal weather, lets leave it at the bugs are out in the evening now. I hate being under a car sharing a trouble light with a dozen furry moths.

To my amazement, DHL rolled into my driveway today (Saturday!) They were playing catch up from the Friday snow storm we had.

Well, I just received several more claims in the Milwaukee area, so it looks like I'm going to be near Green Bay and US Chrome. I'm going to call them Monday to see if they can do my block. If they can I'm bringing it with me and will deliver it to them. We shall see....

Rich, you really might want to give this plan a second thought. If I understand correctly you plan to bore a 4.7L block (97mm) to 5.0L (100mm) and nikasil coat it because you found some pistons that don't need nikasil but already have the "maybe" $400 of machine work in fly cutting 16v reliefs done?

85/86 blocks are cheap, $1000 at the most for a short block in good shape (I paid less for a complete running low mileage motor), pull the pistons and have them fly cut, don't touch the block and keep the full thickness cylinder walls, and be WAY ahead in dollars.

I spoke with US Chrome, They could bore my 4.7 to 5.0 but don't have the finishing tools for the alusil. As my pistons are 928 5.0 pistons I won't need the Nickie finish. So back to my local guy to get the bore job done. The told me $ 250.00 to do it and they used to do Chevy Vega block back in the day. They were also ALCOA 390.

$250 for boring 8 cylinders? One hell of a great price, but be careful.
Ooops, That's what I thought I typed...

I have a working relationship with these guys. I've known the guy that runs the boring machine for 30+ years. back in the day he always wanted to run his BB Chev against mine.
I'm as concerned as you are. Thanks, A cheap price doesn't always translate into cheap work. I went over the process with the shop, left them detailed info on the material and what is required to get a proper finish. I'll report the results, good or bad...

The only thing I'm missing is the piston to wall clearance. I won't drop the engine off until I have that info. I don't have time right now to look it up. Working for a living sux sometimes...
