using a chemical stripper may be quicker, but you have environmental concerns and "other" parts to keep the stripper away from.....not to mention for some of us it's just plain messy (so is sanding, but at least you can sweep it up).

of course, your other alternative is sanding (grinding in my case), but it just depends on how much labor you want to put into it.

it took me approx 15 hours to strip the paint (12 coats) off my Euro. I basically did one section per day.....with a 36 grit paper. yes, that's pretty coarse, and it will leave grinding marks----to be filled with several coats of filler primer. take care to not let the grinder/sander heat the metal----keep it moving all the time.

be sure to wear a mask and goggles if you do the grinder/sander route---rubber gloves if you go the chemical route. also, don't do either of these in an enclosed area.....

I have approx 30 hours in paint removal, parts removal, interior removal----just to get it to the point of being ready for body work (rust repair, welding the holes [rub strips, marker lights, rear wiper, antennae], installing Louie Ott Nizzzazzz fenders, etc), then comes numerous filler primer coats--block sanding each and letting each of them breathe for weeks on end--, and then paint. Then it's on to putting the car back together--this may involve many more hours because you have to be careful not to damage the newly painted pieces.

On the other hand, Dad sanded his down to the metal, masked it himself, and then had a pro spray it. He did his entire paint project for less than $600 including paint, materials, and labor. (It does not include his labor..... )

I'm thinking with a black car other than fixing a few rust spots I would "polish" off the added layers of paint, and aim for a light coat over as much of the factory paint as I could.

What do you use to strip the bumpers since they are plastic?

for the rubberized parts (front and rear bumper, headlight covers) you can sand off the paint. it is something to take care doing, just don't go after it with a grinder. if you are lucky and don't have 12 coats of paint to remove (like mine), you can do this with a 120-180 grit paper. I used a palm sander with 120 grit paper on the headlight covers, and it took about 30 minutes per cover.

an easier way is to locate a shop that uses a media blaster--walnut shells comes to mind....quicker, environmentally friendly----less labor.

Hi Russ,

What is a palm sander? Is this electric or that rubber block? Is this how you removed your paint from you bumpers? Also, whats the hps on your car? Is it painted yet?

There is bumper striper out there for bumpers only, or just sand it off but you then have to sand smooth the little bumper fibers from the plastic bumper that you get from sanding the bumper with 180 or 220 grit.

Will this work?

Bulldog Flexible Bumper Stripper by Klean-Strip, is a paint remover designed for flexible parts. If you follow instructions, you’ll be able to strip any flexible bumper regardless of composition. Urethane parts survive the stripping unharmed, even if the OEM coating is a two-part epoxy. Two more pieces of good news: Bulldog Stripper comes in a handy spray can, and it stays put...even on vertical surfaces. So far, so good, but how do you force that bumper to take (and keep) paint? Let’s take the next step in preparation: again, leaning on Klean-Strip for the answer.

You need to follow the paint line that you are use to prepare the rare bumper for primer ( Dupont it is clean first with 2320s then sand then use 2330s one coat let flash 15 min then put on your primer)

Sorry sonnet3 for the hijack. Any special primer, or does normal primer flex? Thanks Glen!

Leo, you have to follow whatever directions for the specific paint you plan to use. This is why you need to find a paint guy that knows the paint. The places that sell the paint "may" know the recommended procedures for the products they sell, but I would rather trust the guy that is going to spray it on. He is the one whose feet I would hold to the fire for results.

If you are striping it to bare metal then you neeb to use any primer that it direct to metal like dp26, dp25 ,dp27 in (BASF0.

I am still talking about the rubber bumper material. Reason being, I want to prep it myself before taking it to a pro painter. Since I never painted a rubber part, I know the actual paint requires Flex Agent, but what about the Primer?
