piston ring question

Got a good lead on some flycut pistons for the Hybrid rebuild. My current pistons were flycut by yours truly using an isky cutter and a drill....I would like to go with a professionally cut set this time.

My question is, this set is tolerance 1 pistons. Are the rings ordered to match the tolerance or do all 3 tolerance levels take the same rings? I only see one set of rings offered by the big 3. I was told hte diffeent in tolerances are .010mm each step, so perhaps the rings work on all 3?

PET also shows 3 piston grades but only one set of rings.

Finally are there any major gains using Original Porsche 928 rings $150 a set plus verse the OEM Goetze at $45 a set? I noticed the big 3 offer a cheaper 944 100mm part number as well. Will they work fine?

Finally when I install the new pistons, will I need to heat the rod ends to prevent galling? I'm thinking not.

Sorry for the dumb questions, last time I flycut with the pistons still in the block.

Thanks!

as for ring set availability----I don't know.

when we were discussing this (email), I didn't recommend re-using your rings on my pistons.

when installing the ring set, you will first need to measure the ring end gaps, as placed in the cylinders. refer to FWM for the correct end gap measurement.

I know of no differences in manufacturers other than cost, perhaps others may chime in?

no, do not heat anything when installing the pistons/pins/rings/bearings...etc.

I think Hacker has had some positive things to say about the 944 rings, maybe he will comment?

Same rings on all 3 piston group sizes.

Are the 944 p/n piston rings chromoly? I think there was an option of a chromoly top ring in the 951. Maybe Mr. Kuhn or Abby can clarify.

Russ, you've been a HUGE help! PAYPAL sent for the pistons. Ordering the rings and lower end fasteners tomorrow. Local guy is going to balance everything when I'm done. Going with the Goetz rings, hate to go cheap, but less than half the price...

I would never use Gotze rings again. They have a 3 peice oil ring vs Porsches one peice. The three peice style rings work fine in a chevy, but Porsches rings are very narrow. These three peice rings can pop out during install and wreck your fricken day. I'm spending the money. You get what you pay for when it comes to Porsche rings.

What is the best source for Porsche rings, what other models fit the 5.0? Shark, where are you getting Porsche rings for 150.00? 928 Int lists them for 45.00 a piston.

Best ring type to use in the 5.0L is the 951 rings (944 turbo). The top ring is chrome, oil ring is two parts.
Pick up mine at Paragon.

Guess I'm still a little confused on the size. Tolerance group 1 pistons should be .010mm over sized.

But here on Pelican they have 1st over rings that are 100.5mm, not 100.010mm.

So do the tolerances go 0,1 and 2 for light honing, 0.010mm at a time and still take stock rings with proper end gap?
Then the first over would be for a block that is bored .5mm rather than just honing, again starting with tolerance 0,1 and 2 each 0.010mm over the 100.5mm? Now requiring First Over rings?

Looks like the 951 rings may be the way to go.
