How not to lift a 928?

Just noticed this on ebay, aren't the lift pads in the WRONG spot near the front of the car?

Alot if times the lift arms will not retract far enough to pick up the outer lift points. It is more than acceptable to use the frame rail (as pictured) to lift the car.

Have you ever looked at the junction of the framerail and firewall? There are multiple pieces of steel folded together. Those frame rails will not dent if you lift at that junction. Now I guess if you put the lift arm back under the middle of the floor they will dent. But not if the lift arms are properly positioned. I have never bent a frame rail on anything lifting at those points. Those rails are part of the crash structure and will not bend easily.

most 928's have dents in their frame rails due to people lifting them incorrectly. They will and do dent easily.

To quote Jim Bailey: "They are not frame rails in my opinion but floor / seat supports and nearly always are bent."

The real strength is in the door sill. Those 'frame rails' are not particularly structural, and dent easily. It's rare to find a 928 that has perfect rails, because someone has tried to use a jack on them at some point.

928 Motorsports sells a reinforcement for the rail, but I still don't think it's a good idea.

Using a jack and stands, there is only one good method for lifting a 928, AFAIK.

I don't know but it looks to me like there might be wooden blocks at the jack points and lift arm and the weight is resting on the lift arm/block and the jack point. Many times a lift won't retract as said. If so a block supporting it on the lift arm and jack point is acceptable approach. If they are using the seat rails than I agree it is wrong.

seeing as how this subject brings out the "ire" of most 928 owners.......

I'm curious of how many current 928 owners have a car(s) that have the rails crunched/bent/destroyed........??????

I'll start:

Yes, mine are a mess.

Next?

The only thing my car has after 62k miles and 3 owners is some slight scrapes on the front under pan, otherwise looks like the day it left the factory. I have lifted my car using the wooden blocks on the lift arms at the jack points and it worked perfectly without any dents. Early 911's usually suffer from the same issues as the 928 with improper lifting. Porsche made adjustments to the design with the 964.

I am assuming I can blend this in with black again?

Most of that should buff right out, but that lift needs some touchup paint.

You can use a stud gun and slide hammer to fix much of the damage from improper lifting. Most of the dents should pull right out. Cover with some undercoat and it should look good as new.
