help with 1982 928 stick shift

Hello, can anyone please shed some lite on the shifiting problem i have with the 928. The car shifts "funny" when going up hill or doewn hill, also if you park it on an incline either way the car locks in 1st or reverse gear[ depending on what gear you leave it in] when you shut the engine off. You have fight the shift leaver to get the it out of gear, it dosen't matter if the car is running or not. When the trans shifts in to neutral in feels like a automatic trans car that has been forced out of park on a hill ,were it has been parked. I put new synros, and a mainshaft bearing in the trans about 5k miles ago. Jacked up the rear of car and looked around and things apear to look ok. thanks in advance John

Hmm... Aside from the most likely shifter linkage issues, motor and/or transmission mounts could be a culprit as well.
First remove the shifter boot and see if the shifter is together with bushings present, it will probably be flopping around with no bushings and the clips not in place. That would be an easy fix. Next are the shifter coupling at the box and front pivot point at the front of the torque tube.

Thanks MIKE, i noticed when i jacked up the rear of the car, using the crossmenber for the transaxle, that every time i pushed the jack handle dowen the trans seemed to bounce a wee bit. Is there a way to ck the trans mounts other than looking at them? john

The motor mounts could be the most likely problem if your whole drivetrain is indeed moving around.
The engine/trans is effectively one piece, if the motor mounts fall apart the trans mounts could allow some movement even if they're not bad although they probably are now because of age and being stressed by the motor mounts not doing their job.
IMO it's good practice to replace the trans mounts along with the motor mounts.
